LAST EDITED ON Jul-21-18 AT 05:13PM (MST)[p]New to the area and looking for suggestions as to which elk tag I should pick up, Coast or Cascade? I bought a Sportsman's Pac, but haven't picked up my elk tag yet.

Any pointers of a good starting point to find a bull on public land would be greatly appreciated too.

I always hunt east for archery but the general difference is this.
Cascade bull will have less hunters and nicer country to hunt than the coast. Coast hunt will have a much higher density of elk but also of hunters and on average nastier country. Sorry I can't be of more help and good luck.

Do you like brush and rain ? or lots of brush and lots of rain ? that's how you decide between those two hunts.

I don't want to sound discouraging but either hunt will be tough unless you are in the woods often before season. I'd recommend looking over the success rates of the various units to see how many hunters we successful and the general amount of pressure each unit gets. Here's a link for the 2017 harvest rates. Just remember these include harvest data for private and public land lumped together.

I hope this helps

the cascade general rifle hunt is the worst hunt i have ever done for crowds. folks here say the coast is worse. I can't imagine that. I hunted near Prospect
