I guess I just haven't seen them associating with each other;and I guess its more common than I thought. These are isolated pictures; altogether, there were 42 horses and 7 elk in the group before they spooked and scattered.
And then there was this awhile ago!:)

That one in the stockyard makes me laugh as how many times have you heard over the years just tie one up outside for me when I get there.

tough shot though LOL

Horses are quite like elk so I don't think the elk get spooked so much by them. Cows are noisy with all of their bellowing which puts the elk on edge so they avoid them more. Just my opinion.

My Oregon bull from 2016 was feeding side by side with range cows on national forest land. I am sure the cattle helped hide my noise. Wild horses nearly ruined my stalk in Nevada last year. They were snorting and running back and forth. The bull didn't care and I was able to get past the horses and shoot the bull

In Oregon I have seen herds of elk with cattle and have seen a herd of elk right beside a herd of wild horses. I thought it was odd myself but speaking to some of the other hunters in the areas they had seen it many times before as well.

I've ridden my horse right into a herd of elk more than once. some didn't even get up.

Once they wind you it's over though.
