New Mexico unit 7

I drew my first elk tag in unit 7 New mexico first rifle. I'm excited to get after some bulls. Does anyone have any tips for this unit? I planned to hunt La Ventana Mesa or Mesa Portales. Also how are the rattle snakes, bears and mountain lions in this area?

I was at the public meeting Thursday in Albuquerque. My BEST advice look up the landowner list for UW ranches ! Find those ranches

Thanks for the tip. I prefer to do diy on public land hunts. The last two years I've hunted antelope and mule deer in Wyoming.

They have to allow access if they took a private tag.

UW means they open their gates to public in exchange for their clients gaining access to public land. There was a big time rancher there at the meeting and from what I understand there is a ton of elk on his property.

Sorry forgot to update. It was a tough hunt alot of road hunters driving on anything accessible by truck or ATV. Very low numbers. Saw one bull 5 point bull the first day but couldn't get closer than 750 yards before he was gone. The bulls weren't talking. It was still a fun hunt found some sheds and got my first elk hunt under my belt.
