Unfortunately for the San Juan unit this bull and zorro and 2 other bulls that were close to 370 was all that was produced. Lots of tags taking home 320-340 bulls. Next year looking less promising.

That's what our "age class objective" has done for our LE unit's.
We are headed back to the day's where a 350" bull is a giant.

Just spent my 25th year muzzle loader deer hunting down on the Abajo Mountains. Without a doubt, its the worst year I have seen dealing with drought. Of course it rained pretty much constantly during the muzzy hunt. But it was far too late to help this years crop of groceries. While I agree that the age class fiasco hasn't helped at all, the drought had far greater ramifications to me in 2018. I wish they would of left the age class alone on SJ and a few other "Premier" units. But I aint a biologist.

Nice..!! This is what we have all signed up for as Sportsmen in Utah..!! 22 year wait to hunt an elk, with a rifle, in the rut- by someone else... This SJ Bull is really everyone's bull. We all sacrificed opportunity in order to give this guy the chance to pay a high-priced outfitter a ton of money to kill a resource that we should all have a chance at (but won't). Maybe he even paid top dollar for an auction tag to hunt this Utah State resource, cutting to the front of the line. And a hunt that was apparently a "cake walk". I wonder if this idiot Joe realizes he paid a ton of money to someone that literally stated the trail cameras did the work. LOL

This photo/post represents everything that is wrong with Utah's elk hunting plan. A bull that didn't receive enough hunting pressure during his life and made it to 9 years old. An outfitter's watermark. 2 product placement tags in the second sentence of the post.!!

"Therefore, wo be unto him that is at ease in Zion!" 2 Ne. 28: 24

If they increase tag numbers, then I'm all for the days of 350" bulls being top tier slamdunk. Raising 400" bulls on public land while restricting opportunity to hunt all so the highest bidder can shoot it is disgusting at best, evil at worst.

"Therefore, wo be unto him that is at ease in Zion!" 2 Ne. 28: 24

I too think this is ruining the sport of hunting for the average hunter. Not very sporting or fair for the game either. Not sure what can be done.

I'm from NM , really curious if someone can break down what exactly this means. Big bull here , great representative of the sj on a dry year even.

Browning you must really hate outfitters? What about my wife drawing a SJ muzzle loader tag last year with 6 whole points? We had a spectacular hunt and the Blue Mountains and took a 16 year old bull that has lions battle scars on his neck, on the second to last day. He is a 330 bull and we could care less. We spent 2 amazing weeks chasing bugles across 11000 foot ridges and clear down low in pinion and junipers. We had a great time and are the exact opposite of the BS you just posted. Every year, folks draw tags. Every year folks buy guided hunts. What's wrong with either? You cant have unlimited tags so you can hunt every year AND keep the quality of bulls on special units like San Juan. So you give very few tags and when somebody, LIKE MY WIFE, draws one, its the hunt of a lifetime!!! I will never draw down there but I sure don't begrudge folks who have the means to buy a conservation tag. And I don't belittle the lucky few who draw the tag. To me, you are bitching about not drawing a SJ tag yourself? And pissed at folks who did?

Oh, he gets it alright and it's too bad that he and all the others in Utah that get it don't get together and change what DP started with his SFW system that has ruined Utah for the average guy that can't draw a decent tag in a lifetime! I'm glad I hunt the great state of Wyoming where a good general bull tag can be had every few years by just about anyone that has the time and limited resources.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-14-18 AT 05:50PM (MST)[p]Im 90% certain this bull was one we had a chance at last year in the late hunt, we watched him till the sun went down hoping to see him the next morning, but he had dissapeared. He is one of the bulls I included in this video... https://youtu.be/jgjYeFsh3aM

can you tell which one?? He's the one where I say "That bull is 50 inches wide"

BUGLEnmIN - This bull only grew to 400" because the management plan on the SJ is to highly restrict opportunity in order to hopefully grow a bull this old, and this big, so that a guy like Joe can then pay an outfitter top dollar to kill the bull. I also speculated that he paid for an auction tag at our Hunting Expo to move to the front of the line without waiting for Bonus Points.

So, as Utah residents, we all sacrificed opportunity by being complacent with our system. We all said- sure, let's restrict hunting to just 20 people per year for the elk rut, in the rut on SJ. That way, there will be a few 400" bulls for the state to pimp out.

"Therefore, wo be unto him that is at ease in Zion!" 2 Ne. 28: 24

No DesertRanch. I don't hate the player, I hate the game. The outfitter is just a product of a poorly managed system. And no, I don't put in for SJ. I only commented on SJ because it is the topic of this thread. Many other LE elk units are similarly mismanaged.

I've been a part of that system too- on the deer side. All of us peasants are okay with the system because we all hear stories like your wife's story. "I know so-and-so who drew a tag on such-and-such unit!" We are all literally playing a lottery every year with our hunting rights. You are okay with saying "I will never draw down there..." ??? Really.?? Where else are you okay with saying, "I will never draw that"..??? I'm guessing the entire state..??

The random draw tags are a pittance that keeps us all complacent.

I drew an archery deer tag for Vernon in 2000. I drew an archery elk tag on Nebo in 2006. I drew a rifle deer tag for Vernon in 2012. And I drew an archery elk tag for La Sal in 2016. And I have drawn a general deer muzzle loader or bow tag every year I have applied. Your story has little merit when you claim we cant draw tags. I probably won't draw San Juan as I have to wait three more years to apply for elk. I hope Utah continues to "Mismanage" the San Juan unit. The quality of that unit is off the scale and the fun we have had there cant have a price put on it. Or we could all draw a tag there every year and completely ruin a special place? You can't have it both ways.

Well, congratulations on beating the odds. It took me 13 years to draw the least applied for LE deer rifle hunt in the state. I drew with max points finally.

Like I said, everyone knows someone who draws with very few points. You're one of those lucky ones. The lottery favored you, well, not you... your wife.

And if you wanna say that it was your hunt too, that's fine, rescind your elk points and wait another 5 years before you put in.

In my family we have only 5 people who put in for tags. After a combined 57 bonus points, we have drawn 3 tags. That is the reality for us and most people I know. I know people with 18 deer points. I know people with 18 elk points. Theyve been putting in since high school. No tags.

400" bulls is not reasonable. 230" muleys is not reasonable. Not on public lands.
