Here is the bull our archery hunter from California took on his hunt yesterday in Unit 7 West. Darin was hunting with AWO guide Hogan Roberts and the hunt lasted four days!

This unit had a muzzleloader hunt just prior to the start of the archery hunt, so the bulls had been pursued and were wary.

Roberts noted even with them being on high alert, and wary of calls and hunter activity, they still had several close encounters.

Arizona is known for producing some large bulls, and on this archery hunt it didn't disappoint.

Congratulations to Darin and to Hogan for working as a team and putting it all together!

That's a Biggee for sure.
Awesome hunt.

This may be a dumb question but why in the hell would Arizona have a muzzleloader hunt before the archery hunt for elk.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-25-18 AT 11:57PM (MST)[p]The AZGFD recently started picking one unit a year to have the muzzleloader hunt in front of the archery hunt. Something they possibly wanted to try out and see what hunters thought. I'm personally not in favor of any muzzleloader/rifle hunts being in front of the archery hunt. I hope hunters with 7W archery bull tags are able to send some comments to AZGFD on whether it's been a positive/negative experience on the archery hunt this year.

I agree this sucks but not as bad as Utah shooting the ##### out of their bulls with archery and then RIFLE and then muzz, all in and before the rut. And then wonder why big bull quality has slipped in many areas.

I did a story on a guy from Kingman who had one of those muzzleloader tags. He passed a ton of bulls from 300-340.

Had to be 350+ or take the tag home. Missed a couple of shots but ate the tag.

With that few tags, don't think it really bothered the hunters or the elk.

AZGFD did this in Unit 9 a few years ago. I had hunters on both hunts.

Archery hunt was better, as it was a late rut!
