Hi everyone. I have been a long time visitor to this site and have enjoyed everything about it. However, this is my first time posting anything. My son was fortunate enough to draw his very first elk tag. I have archery hunted elk since 2000, but have never been on a late season hunt. So, what should we expect? Do the bulls respond to calls post rut? Do they isolate themselves away from other elk? Should we hunt in the pines, junipers or in the nastiest stuff we can find? Should we hunt high or low? We are in very good shape and have no problems going into the places where most others wouldn't think of and are willing to work hard. I just want to make the most of this tag for him. We plan on hunting all day, every day the entire season. Any information you guys would be willing to share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You should see lots of 6x6 bulls on your hunt. We passed over 40 on the recent early rifle hunt!

Problem is the tops are weak on the vast majority of the bulls. Good fronts, weak tops..that was the rule on that hunt.

Saw lots and lots of elk--over a hundred on the last day alone.

Saw one giant bull (370) one 350+ and one about 330-340. The rest were from 280-310.

Good luck!

Your son should have an excellent hunt. The bulls are usually in bachelor herds of two to ten. Normally, they are gravitating towards their winter range. Temper your expectations in regard to size this year. If your son gets too picky he might go home empty handed.

Cactusbuck,

Thank you for the information. We are looking forward to this hunt. My son has already indicated that he's not going to be too picky, but wants an opportunity at a mature bull. Will the elk be very vocal that time of year?

Should be a great hunt with alot of bulls seen.
Get up where you can see alot of country and glass like hell.
You will find them.
Work on shooting that ML out to 300 and it will make a shorter shot a piece of cake.

We learned a lot about this unit in the short time we were there and met some great people in the process. Finding elk was a bit of a chore, but we managed to find a few. This was my 17 year old son?s first elk hunt, so he wasn?t going to be picky. On day five his first and only opportunity presented itself when I spotted a spike about a mile out heading our way. We watched him until he was a few hundred yards out when we lost him in the trees. We figured we could call the young guy in by cow calling. After about a half an hour, he finally showed up. My son made a perfect 85 yard shot. The bull walked 15 feet and tipped over. He was excited to say the least. A day that will be etched in my mind for the rest of my life. Thanks again to all of you that responded to my original post. It was a huge help. And a big shout out to my friend Steve for coming out to help us.
