Would your shoot this bull on a spike hunt ?

LAST EDITED ON Nov-06-18 AT 01:36PM (MST)[p]By the letter of the law (in Utah), this bull is a legal spike. No question about it.

Would I? Probably not.

Vanilla is correct, as far as shooting him with a busted main beam I think you'd be looking for trouble... So no I would not shoot him...

not from Utah, but curious as how that is considered a spike?

*We are all in the same boat, just
wishing to be hunting right now!*

I'm not familiar with Utah?s spike regs but if it states does not branch above the ear as most do then it's legal. With the video for evidence of how it was before being shot I'd shoot it.

Here is the definition of a spike in Utah, copies and pastes straight from the administrative rule:

?Spike bull" means a bull elk which has at least one antler beam with no branching above the ears. Branched means a projection on an antler longer than one inch, measured from its base to its tip.

The broken side does not branch above the ear. That is evident from the video.

Legal? Yes. Would I shoot him? No in fact I passed one bigger than him a couple years ago, last day of the spike muzz hunt. Three reasons I passed. First, he won't eat worth a crap because he'd been rutting and was in poor shape. Second, he would be a lousy looking euro mount and third, knowing he was broke, he would probably have been a solid 340 bull the next year for some lucky tag holder assuming he didn't bust again.

Hey BIGJOHN!

Just Because I Told you not to Shoot a Spike/PISSCUTTER doesn't mean I Said it would be OK To Shoot a Big Bull on a Spike Tag!

Show us the Pics of Him on your Side X Side!:D

LAST EDITED ON Nov-07-18 AT 00:52AM (MST)[p]Guess I'm a horrible person, but I most likely would have busted him. Especially With the video as proof he was like that before I shot him.

If anything it will give the Dwr a reason to change the rule to not allow busted bills to be shot.

On this unit we are getting a lot of bulls with a club on one side or the other. When I first saw this bull I thought he was one of them. If he was one of the club bulls. I would have taken him out of the herd. But seeing it was just a bull with a broken main beam. I don't believe in taking advantage of the system. He will be a six point bull again next year. I think a lot of hunters do the same thing on the management deer hunts. Looking for a great broken buck to shoot. Instead of taking the bucks with weak genetics. Ether way he and his buddy where fun to watch. We saw over 200 head of elk and only one real spike all weekend. This being last weekend, the last weekend of the muzzleloader hunt.
