WY advice

I've got 10 points for this year. Looking at options.

I can possibly draw Unit 7 special. Looking at some hunts there. I'd prefer a trespass but have looked a little at Wagonhound and Triple Creek? Don't mind paying for an outfitter but not sure I want to pay $10k plus. Anybody know of a trespass type hunt in Unit 7?

Not sure I can draw 16 but sounds like Q creek might be an option if I did.

I'm open to anything. Could possibly draw Type 2 Unit 54 special, Unit 45 and some others. I've got a resident buddy who can take me into Wilderness but only for 1-2 days at a time due to his work schedule.

I'm good with DIY public if I have a reasonable chance to kill something. Hate to burn 10 points and just flop. I live in TN so scouting time will be limited but I should be able to make one trip out there and then come back for both archery and rifle.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Lee,

There are some recent posts on this forum and on the Wyoming one as well. You can PM me on the little experience I have on the subject.
I think it boils down to what kind of experience do you want and what kind of country you want to hunt. Cabin hunt or horseback/tent hunt.
There are really good guides in all of the areas that you mentioned for much less than 10k.

Thanks. PM sent

I'd prefer a backcountry hunt mostly but would listen to any options for lodge/cabin/wall tent or whatever. Don't need fancy bed and fancy meals so I hate to pay for that part of it but am open to anything at this point.

Don't have anything to offer for your hunt, but looks like TN is well represented on this site! I'm in Knoxville.

Good luck!

Boundaries are complex in places but you can archery hunt DIY in 7 effectively with good maps. it can be crowded near roads and trails. there are big bulls in the private for sure, but IMO not worth the $$$ when you can hunt the NF for free. Just outwork the others, and keep your expectations reasonable. During rifle, might be a different story and elk may be holed up on private, so if you plan to go then, maybe pick a different unit.

If I had 10 points again I would be giving Josh a call at Trails West. High success on nice bulls in the wilderness.

Thanks guys. Lots of good info. I'll pan on call Josh for sure and several others.

I think I've replied to all of the pm's.

Why not hunt 45 and go into the wilderness with your friend for a few days at a time and then hunt the forest the rest of the time? I guess it boils down to what type of hunt you want and if you want to pay for an outfitter or not?

The 45 hunt with my buddy is high on my list. Definitely looking into that. Just wasn?t sure about hunting the wilderness for a day or two and then having to relocate. I'd hate to find a bull late and then have to leave him and go hunt NF. I'd really like to do a diy hunt though.

Is 45 a good hunt? Think I can get it done DIY? Obviously it's up to my abilities as a hunter but just wondering about opportunities?

Thanks for all the advice everybody. Trying to get all my ducks in a row. I've talked with tons of people including dozens of outfitters in all parts of the state and several Wardens. I have a lot of friends that have hunted WY recently and also have connections and I've spoken to lots of those people too.

I've spoken with Jake with Backcountry Hunting Logistics and he has been super helpful. Highly recommend contacting him in the future just because of how nice and helpful he's been. I haven't spent a dime with him but he has been very responsive and helpful to me and that means a lot. He has some good info and spots in the middle of the state and several Units around Unit 7 and that's sounding pretty good to me.

I've also spoken with Tre Heiner and Josh Martgolio about hunts in the NW units. I really like what they are telling me. Sounds like good hunts with archery and both will make arrangements for me to come back if I need to with rifle. They are both expensive though.

I'm leaning towards hunting Unit 7 as I've gotten some info from friends and may have access to a little private ground that also has good access into some public. Plus, I may be able to do something with Jake at BHL and I feel pretty good about it.

Other recs? 45 is still on my list but I just hear mixed things about using my points there. A buddy hunted 35 last year and killed a nice bull but he thinks its a good archery hunt but not a good rifle hunt. Another buddy drew 38 last year as a random and hunted the Type 9 and thought it was a great hunt. However, there is no archery stamp and not sure I want to draw a Type 9. Anybody have an opinion on those areas? Anything I'm overlooking?

I think u have it nailed. I'd be sceptical of the type 9 hunts as well w 10 pts. No reason to burn all those pts on just a bowhunt if u have the opportunity to come back for rifle

Yeah, talking with Josh seems like it can be pretty expensive. I talked with him about a year ago and man, it is VERY tempting to hitch up to his wagon. I have zero doubts that would be an awesome trip!!!
