Idaho Elk / Moose 2018!

Like some others here...I'm generally most interested in seeing hunting pics / success, and hearing a bit about it. So, if you're interested - here's my elk - moose hunt from Idaho 2018.

I was fortunate this year to win a couple of the Idaho Super tags...two of which included moose and elk. Unfortunately I had never hunted Idaho before, and although I was "fully aware" of good units, I had never actually hunted any of them personally.

Regardless, I got geared up with a new 4-wheeler and RV (my raffle tixs hunt - just got really expensive) and set about figuring out where to go / what to do. It was just me and my chocolate lab for 34 days, but it sure was a lot of fun!

Frankly I saw a ton of elk...literally everyday. The moose were obviously less frequent - but still very plentiful. I was hoping for a 380" plus elk, but mostly saw 300" - 350" bulls. I did find a giant (6x7 over 380") but let's just say it didn't work out for me. No biggie...I did shoot a 360 2/8" bull on Oct 1st, so all wasn't lost. I know the pics are bad - but I was 100% solo the entire time, so my apologies! My 13th bull over 350".

I know the area I was hunting had some great moose too, but anything over 160" was gonna do me fine. Again, I just didn't know the area like others, so I was a bit limited in experience / knowledge. Note to self - do not shoot a moose 3/4 of a mile from the nearest road - by yourself, a couple years after your heart-attack! Just sayin - :) Taken Sept. 22nd!

Grizzly Bear and I spent plenty of nights sleeping in the dirt, glassing for critters, and just hanging out. I saw lots of game, and if only I knew the area then - like I do now?! Maybe next time?!

You're gonna Need a Bigger Truck!:D

Nice Job!

I know so many people in so many places
They make allot of money but they got sad faces

It Ain't Easy being Me!:D:D:D

Must be driving pretty straight! Or that tailgate would look like a horseshoe!! Congrats on your tags and animals!

GH, lucky! Great tags and great animals. But your pics don't seem to reflect you enjoyed your time.

Strictly a non-hunting tip--smile in your pics. I'd be grinning ear-to-ear with those fatties.

Congrats!

Wow, 34 straight days of hunting and two spectacular trophies - that is the stuff dreams are made of. Congratulations to you.

Just curious, how well does your truck handle a heavy load and towing a trailer? I've been wondering if I can get by with a smaller pickup (currently have an f-150).

LAST EDITED ON Jan-06-19 AT 09:21PM (MST)[p]Nice man! How was hunting with your dog?

Been debating that as I don't have any friends nearby who are interested in bowhunting (and my dog is better company than some of them anyways :D ). Do you leave the dog in the RV each day or is he out there with you?

My lab loves being outside and is pretty calm but I still think she'd get too wound up being around a game animal to actually hunt with.

So I take him with me when I am glassing, hiking / looking, etc. But ya...I can't take him when I am actually planning to hunt. I can't keep an eye on him, and hunt at the same time - wish I could though!

LAST EDITED ON Jan-13-19 AT 05:43PM (MST)[p]That's what I figured. Thinking mine will make good company for some scouting trips. Nice critters too btw.

Used to duck hunt a bit but now living in NM I'm trying to figure out training her to shed hunt.

Cheers
