WILL BE HUNTING THIS AREA SOON. WE WERE THERE AWHILE BACK AFTER THE RAINS SEEN SOME DEER. THE WEATHER WAS STILL UNSTABLE LOTS OF THUNDER AND LIGHTNING SO I FELT EVERYTHING WAS HOLDING TIGHT. AND WAS OPENING WEEK OF ARCHERY DEER SEASON SO THERE WAS PRESSURE IN THE AREA. WE WENT AS FAR AS TROUT CREEK AND BIRCH CREEK.THE LOWER FOOT HILLS ALL LOOK GOOD WE DIDNT HAVE TO GO UP IN THE VALLEYS AND GLASS MUCH.WE CHECKED OUT THE HOUSE RANGE THE CONFUSIONS RANGE DIDNT FIND MUCH WATER. FOUND SOME GUZZLERS LOTS OF WILD MUSTANGS IN THE AREA.I REALLY DONT NEED TREE HUGGERS OR OUTSIDE INFLUENCES TO SPOIL THE HUNT.I UNDERSTAND THE AREA SET ASIDE FOR THE MUSTANGS.SO THAT IS WHY I LIKE THE DEEP CREEK RANGE NOT MUCH RD.ACCESS A LONG DRIVE ON DIRT ROADS TO GET THERE.ANYONE KNOW ABOUT CALLAO ? DO THEY HAVE A STORE THERE ? IF NOT HAVE TO PACK LOTS OF GAS.I WISH I HAD MORE TIME TO GET OUT AND GLASS.YOU KNOW NEW JOB HAD TO BEG BORROW AND SHORT OF KISSING ASS TO GET TIME OFF.SO I HAVE BEEN WORKING LOT OF HOURS TO GET OFF.SO ANY INFO. WOULD HELP. LV OAKEY

I always take extra gas when I hunt there just in case of an emergency, because the closest gas is in Wendover or Delta as far as I know.I would hunt Toms canyon on opening morning in the basin at the top.Find a good saddle and spot around there will be some pressure but not like other places. The ticket out there is patience and good optics if you know what I mean.Rileys canyon is another good spot if you have an atv to get in there unless you want to hammer your truck. The deer bed early and come out late because of the heat.

got your info verry good i have spent many hours checking out topozone.com on toms conyon and the basin.yes thats where we will make comp or n. of at willow springs.i was on a site sunday they said 3,500 hrs.of hunting per yr. lots of rough ground o well we will cover some and get up high and glass.i have seen photos of the area.they look very good. as far as gas we will pack lots.well this is the plan things change we will be up there early and ready. lv oakey

Don't know how much time you have spent in that part of the desert, but the towns you see on the map (callao, trout creek, ibapah, etc...) aren't really towns. Just ranching homesteads. Some of them only have 1 family of half dozen people living in them. Some are only seasonal. No services whatsoever, Delta is the closest. If you really got in a pinch, the people out there would help you, but you would pay out the arse for things like gas. Take plenty of everything. Stay off the Eskdalians land at all costs, they are not fond of visitors.

6 years back I went to Ibapah, which lies just out side to the north of the Goshute res. At that time a young plig. coulple sold gas & grocerys there, they had some rifles there, which on pawn from the res.
The place looked like a fortess, simular to the oil refinery in the movie, Mad Max, complete with retractable tire spikes in the front entryway. after inquiring way the place looks like a prison, the plig. told us that frequently after midnight cars would ram through the old gate & franticly bang on the house windows & doors claiming they had an emergency, the pligs would wake up get dressed & rush outside to find out how they could help, only to be greated by natives explaining they had ran out of beer & that was thier crisis.

I have friends in Ibapah and know some guys that hunt that range every year.

From what I've heard be prepared for LOW deer numbers. VERY LOW this year from their recent reports.

There are a few out there, but if you are looking to see large amounts of deer, you are on the wrong range.

The glory days of the Deep Creeks have long since past.

Best of luck and hope you find a big 'un!!

Personally i would not bother with the deep creeks. It's a nice area away from people but you have to work your ass off to see a doe. but you can see lion ##### all over

i have no idea of eskdalian ? what is it ? i have spent around 30 hrs. on topozone.com and some others.never seen the likes of.we have been to trout ganby.yes not much to speak of.called the sherife dept.juab co. they said windover or delta no store bring all your stuff cant buy anything out there.we plan to pack heavy on cangoods dry food cupasoupes ect.stuf on ice to use fast then hold on.hope the nights freez to help the ice. the enternet shows not so so dryice is the plan. lv oakey

i feel we have the same idea.very little rd.access no bars no stores.dont like rd. hunters dont get me wrong love my beer ect. my hunt comes first.we fill this area holds good bucks if you work the ods to your favor.do lots of glassing.walk stop look listen and watch your back side.what more can one ask for.

used to live on the res. in ketchikan alaska learned some good stuff there from the elders.as i have herd said skinwalker.they call kus-ta-ka have herd many stories of this.bottom line never look them in the eye or they wiil steal your soul.they can slip shape to anything they wish to.dead monster rack bucks ect.if you fill the kill looks wrong not natural walk away.yes there is lots of things going on around the res. i will stay clear of the area to many if factors involved.dont wont or need to deal with a soveron nation.just like a mexaican jail.and you dont speak the language.

you never hunted deer in alaska. that is hard the bears the wolfs 3 indian tribs and an island 152 miles around 12 feet of rain on top of that everything is soaked hard to make afire wind allways changing and your soaked to the bone.the bears will rob you blind when you are gone.the worst is they are pissed offed you put your food out of reach.100yds. away so they trash your camp.we can deal with lions they have my respect.do you know how much it costs for lion tag? i know it may be a hard hunt but that is the way we hunt.i would rather deal animals than people.hunt high let people do your drive and pick your shot.or even go way back. im no stranger to walking in the dark done it mant times we have gps.good to go

good name reminds me arkansas.awooo.deer number are ok i used to have a small ranch in central oregon and hunted an area not as rough low count but some big bucks.the main thing was learning there paterns once you start seeing good deer remember what is going on.i cover lots of ground and diffrent transsittions as far elavations move alot where are they beding water trails what kind of areas are they north faceing how cold is it? will they they be on eastern slopesat first light.everyone has there way thease are some of mine.if you ever ran dawgs you seen the back trail. lv oakey

I would strongly recommend taking two spare tires for a couple reasons. 1- There have been many times people have been stranded out there after going through one spare, 2- I have seen the damage that the cute little green Plastic-Top roofing nails can do when spread on the roads (not my vehichle mind you). The sherriff deputies always take two spares when they head out west. Good luck.

I second Graycliff's tire recomendations. I've been stranded out west before with 3 flats. The regular tire and both spares. If you are down to no spare one tends to not dare go up any side roads and that can dampen a hunt. Out there there isn't a close town to get your tire fixed so you can have a spare again.

As for posts 9-12, they have me confused. :)

Don't expect to be alone. There are a lot of hunters on the Deeps, probably more hunters than deer. We have hunted the Deeps for 15 years, last 3 years we saw 2 bucks and a handfull of doe, while seeing numerous hunters. The Elk have ruined the deer and as was said earlier, The Deep's glory days are long past. You can have my place in line out there. Good luck on Your Hunt.

That might be true
but i sure would love to hunt in alaska
maybe when i become rich
lion tags seem to be reasonable price, but i haven't ever given it a try.

Why do keep hunting there then? There aren't al lot of deer but I've seen some bruisers.

yes the time we went up to trout the rd. was bad after the rains.all washed out and lots of sharp rocks.seamed like a long drive in and out.you are right pack tires dont like the nail deal.next deal what pungie sticks like what charley used in nam.sounds like tree hugers or pot growers to me. lv oakey

bad area to have flats.all most as bad haveing a flat in watts after dark.what does one do all ways plan ahead.hope for the best.

some good info what kind of area did you see elk? are they low mid or alpin? holding up in aspin groves? would like some feed back on this.i used to hunt bulls up in big timber for 2 days then the rest of the season in the junipers.see more bulls in the junipers.i used to blade roads for deschutes county rd. dept. was a great job.so i spent a lot of time seeing game and watching movement.allways had my daypack glasses checking out things. lv oakey the job was in oregon

i went to alaska in 1973 i was 17 yrs.started logging highlead on the islands south east in the tongas nat. forest.came from dirt pour family. as my mom would say not a pot to piss in. or a window throw it out.life is good there cost of living high.they have lots of drop camps there. you can charter a plain a float.rent a cabin fron the forest serv.and have a good hunt and fishing trip cheap.i think you can log on to ketchikan alaska . com go from there. lv oakey

I have been around the Deep Creek Mt. for 35 years. It has a fair deer population in the 60's. The State even had a trophy hunt or two out there. Then however, the population took a nose dive, as did most of Utah at that time. However, unlike the rest of the State this unit never recovered. Many reasons have been given for why not. Some say it's the predators, the year round hunting by the Indians on the fawniing areas, pouching etc. The University of Utah did a study and found a type of blood diease. What ever the reason, the deer numbers are still very low.
The introduction of elk by the Indians also may have an affect on the deer.
The other problem with the mountain now is that the B.L.M. has lowered the boundary of the Wilderness area to the mouth of most canyons.
Also, the governor of Utah, (Leavitt) gave the Indians several thousand acres on the south and east side of the Mountain. It was the best access to the unit as well as the heart of the elk and deer popualtions. The Indian reservation boundaries are now very difficult to determine. They come down the south and east side of the mountain much further than before.
The Indians have leased out their hunting rights to a private outfitter who patrols their boundaries dailey.
With the mountain being both in Utah and Neveda combined with the best wildlife ares now being owned by the Indians and low deer numbers. I hope you can see why most of your replies are to not waist your time.

Damn Idian Reservations. Sorry what happened to the natives but giving them all this land is horse $#!^. Do they herd up the animals out there and sell them off like they do out in roosevelt.

i believe you are right.from what i see things have gone down hill.like alot of things in our lifetime i hate to say.progress is our enemy not our allie.to think all we would like to do is have time to ourselves or our families to teach our kids the way of the woods.and we loose our way and our choise as to we have no voice in the matter.my dad is 93 yrs.hunted utah before the atom bomb.he loved the hunt there.grew up on stories of it.i plan on video taping the trip to show him utah now.his health is not that well. his spirit is short, and days are short. really wanted to send him a good video of scouting and wildlife footage. if i send him footage mtn. lion he will not believe it. he killed a few in his time. over grown house cats that do to much damage. i believe it was 1990 the hard winter big kill off found all kinds skulls deer horse cow all over the place. really seemed not to recover. the res. really seams to messing thing up. i lived on the res. in alaska no im anglo saxon. just cant spell well. from what i remember the they tight on the animals not bear or wolfs. giving up more land to over hunt. sounds they are rapeing the land. i have read they put turkey elk big horn sheep maybe some other stuff back to. now fee hunting do these people make any money? i would all most guess the nails in some of the areas are from the indians to stop the compatition. so what would yuu use for back up spot. we have looked at the confusions looked good lots of mustangs not much water. looked at the house range south of dome can. the west side of the range. not much water. good looking area. found 2 good looking spots one with a guzler for birds. the rd. not used at all lots of tall brush in the rd. one main can.lots of side vals. good ground and cover some what easy to hunt. the other in the house range way back in a can.allmost box with 2 excape routes and a big measa above that. dont know of any water. if you have any good info please get back. lv oakey

from the info that i have recived they now have low doller hunts. they pack you in 5 miles 1 day of hunting. you wake up at noon look out your tent. bingo buck at door step. and your name is on it. ive heard tell people have said i wish it was more sporting.they said for 200.oo more you can get 30 ft. more of rope. lv oakey

well boys will go tommarow after work. wish all the best on the hunt.if we do good pics will be posted. i will up date as to the hunt. from the info recived. lv oakey
