Montana draw maybe?

I know I just moved here and already I'm complaning but after hunting this first year I think maybe MT should consider going to a draw system for archery elk and rifle bull. I know I'll probably be ran out of state for such a suggestion, but I feel it would make hunting here alot better. I found that with limited public access and the closing of roads to public hunting grounds it tends to get pretty crowded. The elk also seem to be pretty well trained as to when the hunt starts, it could be the thousands of road hunters or the hundreds of awful bulgles, I dont know but I do know next year my pack horse will be ready to go.

ummmm if you have trouble getting away from the people GET OFF THE ROADS! I hunt elk every year and very rarely see anyone during bow season and only a few people the first couple days of rifle season. If you can't find a spot that isn't over run with people maybe you should look for a new spot... As far as access goes, are you sure you're hunting in MT??? Roads closed, so what that just means less people driving around on four wheelers.

When I was in college, I hunted a place less than 30 min from Butte during bow season, and only on rare occasoins would I even run into people that close to town. Just do a little home work and you will find a spot that is mostly to your self.

As far as going to a draw... MT is going to give out TWO elk tags next year for Residents in some areas OTC. There are plenty of elk. Just because they get smart doesn't mean they should go to a draw so you can drive down the road and plug one! Get out and hunt one down.

There was a proposal in the last legislature to go to a draw in many more hunting districts. I think it made to the front door of the House of Reps. and was promptley burned. There is really no way the average Joe will tolerate a draw for a general season deer. Remember there is a limited entry box draw in the Missourie Breaks for elk. Maybe you have the right idea with a pack horse. The other suggestion I have is to avoid weekends and get back off the roads. There are places you can have all to yourself if you want.

Not to be rude but Montana has 147046 square miles. If you can't find a place to arhcery elk hunt where the crowds aren't, your not serious about your elk hunt.

I have had no problem with crowds even though I am only doing day hunts from Missoula.

Now finding elk - there's the problem!!

O.K. so I was whining a little I just thought I would make a suggestion. You see I've been spoiled with the best elk hunting in the world the couple times I actually drew. I do take my hunting very seriously in fact I dont know many people that will hike in like I will. This year was a little different I had to drag my nephew around , this was his first year hunting and my first up here. Next year I'll be in a sweet spot I'll have more time to scout this year and I promise to hike around all summer long getting to know this wonderful country.By the way where does good old Chuck Adams go to pay for those monsters he's been pulling out? I heard from a source up here that those bulls were in fact farm raised and were taken on private land not public like old Chucky claims in his stories.

Repeat from the rest: Get off the roads. Tons of room out there. If you're going up Gallatin canyon and stay near the roads you're going to run into lots of people. Some guys bugle themselves together!

I've also wondered where Chuck Adams is getting his, some say up along the Sweet Grass Hills North of Shelby. Doubt that they let a grain fed once loose, though.

Nice pics there moosie,looks like you boyz got it down.Actually I saw at least that one bull in eastmans.Was that the record one or was that his second one?Any how such hostility! Jeez I just pass on some info that is goin around MT and I get slammed for it!As for gettin off the roads I did all year I never Road hunt I did see fucts in passing though to my areas.Theres plenty of elk here but if you ever want to get the quality like we had in AZ you'll have to go to a draw! I understand what you're saying, but most people in MT would rather shoot an elk than dream about a 395net bull.

If you want to put in for a draw put in for em. There are a few areas in MT that are draw only and the quality is excellent. Personally I would rather take a sub "395net" bull not in my dreams and get to hunt every year as opposed to once every 15 years... If you like AZ so much move back and hunt there and stay there... Oh wait you wouldn't get to hunt, well maybe once in 10 years. Oh and how many of those "395net" bulls come off public land??? Most of those mosters came along with a pretty heafty price tag.

If AZ is so great then why have the last TWO(2) worlds record archery bulls come from MT??? Any why have there been more BIGGG bulls on the cover of eastmans from UT and MT along with NV Cause we all know that if its on the cover of Eastmans there aren't any big bulls around any place else... Why are you being so arrogant about it... Sure AZ has good bulls but if you think they are the only ones that have big bulls keep telling yourself and your friends that. We'll keep all the "sub395" net bulls in our wet dreams to ourselves.

Hey BearDown, Ya might have Caught me on an Off day... that 395 Class BULL... Is that Stans BULL ? I had it in my House for 3-4 Months this year holding it for him.. It's truely a Nice bull.

It wa Quiet a Sight Actually. I'm going to tone this down for this Post but you need to know were I'm coming from. I own a Website too and Am A member of 6 other ones (At least). I see Guys Crying all the Time about Wolves Ate all the Deer/elk, I can'y shoot one because the weather, or 4-wheelers, or whatever.

There are tons of Animals and I agree there needs to be a Management on them. But, Montana Has it's fair share of BIG Critters. Roumor has it they might even Open up a 2 elk season. Go figure

I've always learned that if you're runing into people, Go to a different area or hunt harder. The first Elk I shot was in a Area that had more people in it then the City of N.Y. opening day. I bailed into the Thickest, darkest hole and Presto, dead elk, Only shot fired that day (that I could hear).

Also, JUST HOW MANY 395 (Stan's class) Bulls died in AZ ? Uhhhh let's count.. there's one... then... Uhhhhh ?!?!!?

this year there were some toads taken fromAZ, All the states had good ones, Montanas Still Dominated the Race though pulling out more 380-400+ bulls then the other states. I don't have the Exact #'s but I can get them. With that, residents can Hunt Every year and NON residents can Hunt Almsot every other year if Wanted too. AZ, you can Shoot a bull (Or get a Wack at one) once every 20 years...

I'll be happy with 10~300 Class bulls on mmy wall in 20 years and the AZ boys with 1~400 class bull.

But then Again, I would rather shoot a spike too (WINK)

Hey moosie yeah thats my bro's bull.Been best freinds since grade school,been huntin together just as long.I remember when he called to say come check it out, I was on the strip doin a little archery deer ,he said it was a good one I figured I would see a 350 bull, imagine my surprise!It was awesome to hold huh?Stan told me to hook up with Kurt this year but like I said I was draggin my nephew around and taking him in any where decent would be a waste of time.As far as this post goes I see your point completely and your right at least I get to hunt!I just realized this will be the first summer I get to scout for a reason and not for just wishful thinkin!I know next year will be better and I did'nt mean to sound like a little whinnin #####!Just a new area and not a lot of time to get to know it!I'll still be puttin in for AZ, I'm really shootin for the tag I really want Muley I'm sure you know where, maybe I'll get it I have max bonus points,have'nt had a tag in 9 years!It was weird huntin deer this year with a rifle!Any ways keep postin those pics they're great man! Hey I left you my e-mail address under your Muley picture, I could'nt figure out how to mail you I really suck at this computer stuff!Anyways yeah I was wondering how Trav and them were doing, I know they were pretty stoked about gettin that tag and if I know Trav that guy will step on a toad and get it! A couple years ago we were on the strip archery huntin I went down this one road and Trav who was behind me went the other way,well I ended up chasing a little three around all mornin and Trav he drives around the corner hop's out of the truck and plugs this really good four! Unbeleivable!

Oscar, The main reason I wanted to hook beardown and Kurt up is so they could show each other the best gay bars in MT. Also Bearscrotum had high asperations of shooting a spike when he moved to MT.

As for AZ vs. MT elk, it is fairly close. I'd take AZ over MT though, take a look in the record book for top 10 elk (B&C,P&Y). Here are a few AZ scores from this year alone. 453 P&Y gross non-typ..........436 P&Y gross non-typ........420 B&C 6x6 (rez bull, but that's not much different than what Chuck Hunts in MT)........415 B&C gross typ............404 P&Y gross typ..........402 B&C gross typ. And as for the two big bulls chuck has shot in MT, they are AWESOME don't get me wrong. Give me 50000 acres in AZ to myself and I'd do alright also..........

I hunted elk for the first time this year with an old Air Force buddy who is stationed in Great Falls now. Hunted the Little Belts SE of GF. Was on my own the first couple days. The 1st day was a Sunday, and the Nat'l Forest roads and trailheads were full of hunters. Completely different starting Monday am though. Not near the hunters. I had a great time; fulfilled a long time dream of hiking in rugged country with a rifle on my shoulder looking for an elk. I new going in that the success rate on a complete do-it-yourself hunt was low, so I didn't harbor any expectations of even seeing, let alone killing a big bull. You guys that say get off the road are right. I never ran into any hunters when I was out hiking around. In some places, I found elk sign within a quarter mile of where I parked. I realized on the first day why, when you read about elk hunting in the Rockies, there are usually horses involved. I occassionally got into some places where I would think "Don't know if I would shoot an elk here if I saw one" for fear it would rot before I could get it out!! Didn't shoot an elk, but my license was elk/deer combo, and I did tag a decent 5 x 4 mule deer - was very happy with him. Then, the last afternoon I was there, we shot a couple sharptails and some Huns, and just before sundown we had the flyrods out standing on the bank of the Missouri!! The Montanan's we met were friendly and helpful. You guys that live out there have it made!!

AZ402 you know that's with my old buddy Jim Beam,and yeah I'm as slow as on old laddy waitin on death, I just have to take the beatdown!.........A SPIKE !!!!! Heck the only Spike I saw beat my ass at pool and then SHE wanted to take me home with her!!!! That was somewheres near Ovando....The whole bar did'nt have enough teeth to make a set of dentures,but I swore I saw someone's mamma there!!!!
