Thanksgiving Mearns Hunt

Had the pleasure of hunting a couple of days down south with Scottyboy, Firstcoues, Scott's bud Rich, and Scott's father Charles. Had three dogs, including Scott's Penny and Virgil, and my Rica. Rustled up several coveys Friday and Saturday. Pretty country to hunt in, with the oak-covered draws and plenty of grass in the draws. Was nice to have a bird hold tight, rather than having to chase after the running and flighty Gambel demon birds.

The passel of Mearns from Saturday. Pic'ed is Scott's LC Smith SxS .410 Lots of young, immature birds due to the good rains this summer.

Scott, Penny the Brittany, and Virgil. Penny would amble and hunt the base of the slopes. Virgil would be with my dog, usually too far to be seen out front in the tall grass in the draws. Virgil thows up a pretty point with an upright tail. Scott should have some good pics to post.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-28-06 AT 02:58AM (MST)[p]Had a good time this weekend.. Got into plenty of birds and the mutts did really good, considering the dry conditions.. I believe we had 16 coveys for the 2 days. Not too shabby!! Got to hunt with my old man again, Casey, Doug, and one of my best buds, Rich.

Here are a few pics I snapped over the course of the two days...

1st covey of the '06 season!! And Penny NAILED them to the ground!! Virgil honoring..

TEAMWORK.... right after I took this quick snapshot, I was trying to move on in and get a shot. Ended up busting my butt and right when I fell, the covey split!! That hillside was STEEP!

here is what Mearns country does to a flat-lander who lives at sea level in TX!! My Dad was ahuffin' and apuffin' this entire weekend!! But he made it! I took this pic from the top of the canyon, looking back at him.. laughing while he was suckin' wind!! I thought it was funny, but he didn't at the time!!

I'll be headed south from now to the end of season about once a week.. this is what I live for out here in AZ.
thanks for lookin!!

Thanks for postin up pics of some of my favorite birds! Bitchin lookin critters. I have to say that some of that terrain looks mighty, MIGHTY familiar......

Congrats to all you guys on what sounds like it was a great weekend. Scotty, tell your dad about a little invention they came out with called a treadmill with an adjustable incline ramp. The perfect solution for flatlander-hillclimber-wannabes (like me).

That's good news about the number of coveys and birds you've found already, says something for the habitat holding up good for em.

Nice birds.Looks like Casey's over and under is a Franchi Alcione Titanium. I love mine.An awesome shotgun.
