Hey just I just got a new little lab a cute little yellow. Her parents were both regestered and good hunters. This is my second lab and want to train her from a young age my other lab was a good she would hunt pretty good but i was 16 and didn't know how to train her well. So I was just curious if you guys could recomend and dvd's or books that work well to let me know what i should be doing with her?

"you can't fix stupid"

Congrats on the new pup. Richard A. Wolters has a couple of very good books out there and should be available through amazon or at the local book store. Good luck

I have a six year old lab that I just started training.. it has been a blast... I liked the book called 10 minute retreiver and I liked a couple of videos from a guy named Shawn Dustin... if you are in utah I will lend you the videos... let me know.. AJ

I've got a video by Shawn Dustin also and recomend it. I've watched him work dogs in person and I like his methods and personality.

I started my dog out by playing fetch with a tennis ball. Just to get the hang of it. Then i started using different things and rewarding her for bringing em back. Then went to tweetie birds. From that it went to bigger items and when i felt she was big enough i took her duck hunting....she learned quick and i took 3 years off due to the military and shot this one and it was like she had never missed a day....its all about the dog i think..but dont get me wrong u have to bring the good out in them but there is a million different ways to do it....good luck..justin

antlerless,

Sounds like you have the makings of a great friend. I have raised only 3 hunting dogs but they turned out pretty good. Looking back, they were all worked at a early age to rely on their nose.

Take a fresh game bird wing, pheasent works well, and play hide and seek with it and your pup. Progressivly make it more difficult for her to find until she can only find it with her nose. This little game will lead to many other ways, including hand signals, to further help your little Miss along the path to being a great bird dog as well as a great friend.

good luck, joey

I've heard that the total retriever series is good. The best thing that you can do for any hunting dog is get it on lots and lots of WILD birds. Pen raised birds will ruin a good dog.

I highly recommend "WATER DOG" on DVD.

Water Dog - A concise training method made from the book by Richard A. Wolters. This video shows you step by step, the simple techniques used by many hunters to rapidly train their retrievers. Watch Charles T. Jurney turn a seven week old puppy into a finished retriever. 82 minute video

Here is a link to buy it- http://www.gundogsupply.com/waterdogdvd.html

I agree that anything from Dustin's will be a good DVD to start off with. The "Retriever Fever" series is a great starting point and can be bought just about anywhere. The Wolters "Water Dog" book is also a great tool when used in conjunction with any DVD series. I would also reccomend George Hickox's "Training the Upland Retriever" video which is also concise, easy, and brings a strong upland aspect in to Shawn Dustin's methods. Use common sense, feel your bird dog out, and use the methods that work best for you and your lab. I have a female black from Dustin Retrievers, hunt with labs and pointers out of Hickox's kennels, and am convinced that these guys, their methods, and breeding programs are as good as it gets. Good luck with your dog, a good lab is an incredible companion and an even better hunting partner. Check out Lion Country Supply www.lcsuppy.com for the best quality and prices for dog and bird hunting supplies. Nothing works better than patience, repetition, and birds...

Wow, just realized that was from an old stinking post! Anyway, you probably have a season under you and your new dog's belt. How'd it go and what worked for you? Hopefully LOTS of birds in the field did the trick.

Dont play fetch with her in your yard or anywhere else that she spends alot of time. I used to do that with mine and now he wont retrieve anywhere but the yard, he just gets too excited about all the new stuff to sniff to pay attention to what he is supposed to be doing.
