I am looking for a small framed GWP or Drathaar. Looking for parents under 50 lbs if possible. Also they need to come from a hunting backgound, not looking for show/potlicking history. My male chess is done (hes about blind) So I am in a bind to get a pup to get started before the next bird season. My replacement chess is a great looking #####, but got potlickerisized by my parents who have empty nest syndrome.

Outlaw, I second Three Devils I've never seen their dogs or met them BUT if they'd have had a dog when I was looking (4/07) I'd have one of theirs and could tell you more. I was sold and may still get one in another 14 months.

Got a beautiful female whelped 11/3/07 thats showing great promise and will be my main project for the next year.

Welcome aboard!!! If you've never had a GWP, you'll never go back. I've had one or more since 81. The only dog I'll ever need and I hunt upland game 20-40 times a year including back to back to back chukar hunts in hot weather.

I hunted over a 3 devils dog last weekend, it was a fine dog. I wouldn't let size be a factor in choosing a dog. Wirehairs tend to be large dogs.

Side note on the breed: They have large paws for their size. My 11 year old has never worn a hole in her pads chukar huntin even on 6-7 hour hunts early in the season. Buddies have to boot their dogs to protect their feet. My pup looks so funny running, all ears and feet. Looks like her feet and ears are full grown and her body hasn't caught up yet.

Might also look for GWP breeders listed in the back of magazines like Sporting Dog Journal.

I am seriously considering getting a pup from smoke creek wirehairs. Anybody have any feed back, I have hunted over a couple of there dogs and was impressed, any more feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I have one of Bills dogs. He's a 2yr old 60lb male. Great prey drive, very trainable, and not too big of runner. They always say it's easier to real them in, but I believe some of the serious trial breeders have tried to breed to much leg into the breed. Bill is a stand up guy who sells HUNTING dogs.

P.S. He was a natural backer right outa the box at 12 weeks, not too shabby. One less thing to do. :) Pm me if you need any further info.

Hey don't knock your parents spoiling your chessy, I'm doing the same thing, he appreciates me. I've had a GWP, great upland hunter, does perform better than my chessies on upland, but I'll never own another one. Chessy works good enough and I like water fowling better, and the big Chessies keep all the stray dogs out of my yard.
You know how to prove that a dog is man's best friend? Lock your dog and wife in the trunk and let them out an hour later and see which one is happy to see you!
