pondering heading to south dakota and or iowa for unguided pheasant hunting...any tips would be appreciated...thanks...yup I have a valid huntin dog...thanks

I am leaving on Sunday for three days in SD. We are paying trespass fees to hunt, but it is essentially DIY.

I am taking my Blackberry and laptop and will try to post while we are there. I may even attempt to post photos.

Have you been there before? Where were you thinking of going? Having hunted pheasants there before, it has always been unbelievable compared to anything I have seen hunting Utah and Idaho... I was raised on a farm in central Utah and we used to have a lot of birds, or so I believed until I witness my first SD "boil"... hundreds, if not thousands of birds taking flight in rapid succession... wow.

Good Luck.

Don't rule out North Dakota, we have some really great pheasant hunting too, and lots of public land. And, depending on where you are, it can be easy to get accessto private land too.

thanks for the input fellers..may try to head out later this season..I have two huntin dogs that deserve a "pheasant boil"...good luck on your hunts

We arrived this morning in time for today's hunt. First let me say that it was VERY COLD... this morning at ~6am, it was 22 and the wind was blowing.

The first few drives were through standing corn and with 4 of us, there wasn't really sufficient coverage to do the drives justice. Never the less, we got a few birds, Three in the first hour. The second area we hunted was some standing "cane" it was epic... before we were positioned, probably 50 birds escaped, once we were in place and started to beat the bushes, the boil began... in the space of 30 seconds, we went from being 25% limited-out to fully limited out and there were many more roosters that we didnt shoot at because we had our limits. Another epic day in SD... we are near Pierre.

Pictures are not practical with the connection I have. I may be able to post some when I have a wi-fi connection.

Looking forward to tomorrow's action,
