I am not sure if any of you fish the gorge for burbot, but my friend and I decided to try for them. We fished all night and
camped out on the ice. That was quite the experience....

We caught about 12 of the ugly things. They are the ugliest fish I have ever seen.

Anyone else on here fish the Gorge? That was my second trip and I plan on doing it again...

I'VE SEEN THEM woodruff!!!

ARE THEY EATABLE???

Bessy,

They say they are a "Poor mans lobster". I was so tired after
camping on the ice all night. I donated them to my friend.

A BURBOT IS A JUNK FISH THAT SOME JACKASS'(S) ILLEGALLY TRANSPLANTED IN TO FLAMING GORGE!!!

FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND THERE ARE LAKES THAT HAVE BEEN DESTROYED FROM THE ILLEGAL PLANTING OF BURBOTS???

BACK AROUND MICHIGAN & WISCONSIN,I THINK???

THE SAD PART IS THEY RAISE HELL WITH TROUT!!!

THEY WERE GOING TO PLANT THE BIG KAMLOOPERS IN FLAMING GORGE UNTIL THEY FOUND OUT BURBOTS WERE FLOURISHING!!!

THEY CLAIM SOME OF THE ORIENTALS RUB THIS BURBOT ON THEMSELVES & IT'S SOME KIND OF LOVE POTION OR SOMETHING!!!

I sent the pic's to Brian to post. However, JB's pic's are the
clearest description.

One of the guys that was out fishing next to us said those things are everywhere in the lake. He said that during the Kokanee spawn, some divers went looking at the fish.

He said the the whole bottom of the lake moved with them (burbot). They are going to destroy a once great fishery.

I have never seen a fish take a jig like they do. We were using
3 1/2" jigs and even the small burbot would completely swallow it. When you would reel them in, the jig head was completely
buried.

where on the lake were you guys fishing. and at what depth. I fish up there a bit. I would like to try and catch some of them.

Ghost,

We were fishing the Confluence area. Fish along any cliffs or rocks in 12-25' of water. Use glow jigs, crayfish scent, and keep the jig slowly moving off the bottom.

You can also fish with 6 poles. I would take as many poles as you can. We caught 1/2 of the fish on poles that were just sitting.

I am making another trip up there in a week or so. If you are up there, give me a call and I will let you know where we are fishing.

sounds good ruff, I'm pulling the rest of my trap line this week so I'll have some time to do a little fishin maybe I'll have to get in touch with you. Thanks for the info..

It's only bout half an hour from my house and I have never fished it. I need to get out there and try it sometime.

I live about 2 hours from Davis Lake in California. Several years ago someone put Northern Pike in the the high in the mountains. The state has spent over 50 million dollars trying to kill the pike by poisioning the lake. I was amazed to read the stats on the eradication program. In ten years they had counted over 50000 dead pike. The last I heard they finally got them.

I know we have them in Washington. They are in the fishing regs.
My father-in-law used to fish for them with a trot line and leave it out overnight. He said they were good eating filleted.
I remember him telling me that were a freshwater cod. If you have ever seen or caught a cod they are ugly, too.
The fish in my left hand is a cod, the other a halibut.

A conclusion is the place where you got tired of thinking.

Used to catch them outta the Clarks Fork in the early spring in Montana. They are awesome eating. Cook em in a little butter, salt and pepper. They shrink up a bit and ya pull the bones out in one piece. Wallah-you have one big chunk of flaky white tastiness

Hey woodruff, We went a few times caught some every time we went, but the question is, I heard that if you were in them you should catch more than that. we were about straight across from buckboard on the east side of the lake. Do I need to go farther north?
