OK Bessy, you been back a few days now from Alaska and i've yet to get/hear the skinny on your trip. Must have fished right? Let's hear about it and any pic's would be nice!

Joey

Joey, not Bobcat but here are a couple Alaska fishing photos. Me and my two brothers went to Kenai in 2004. The weather was too rough for halibut fishing, but thank goodness the Salty Dawg was open! A must stop for anyone visiting Homer. Me in the middle.

The Sockeye (Red) salmon were in thick on the Kenai. One day over 94,000 entered the river. They raised the limit to 6 a day. Our "guides" let us keep their fish, so we brought over 100 salmon home.

Cool Eel!! What's that on the floor inside that place? Looks like peanut husks or something. I'll bet a couple days catching those on medium tackle would be a hoot!

What's up with Bessy? don't he want to come out and play? Let's hear what you got to say Bess. You must have had some fun, eh?

Not a bad question Joey. I think wood chips, but danged if I can remember. I don't remember much after that photo though.:) I do remember the entire place was covered with dollar bills that patrons put up with their name or home town written on them. Lots of famous names.

Medium tackle was the bare minimum. Big, fast water and hot fish was a challenge. Fishing from shore you had to keep them out of the main current or you lost them, as there was no way to follow them.

Thanks Bobcat! Sounds like you got what you went for. Though not monsters, anybody that has landed a 23-35lb king knows what it feels like to hook a big fish. Hope you got to bring a bunch of filets home. That Halibut is about the best! :)

That place really is a fish factory. I regret to have never been there and though i've been in some great fishing including 3 months in southern Florida, Trouting most of the western states, and better than fair where i'm at, Alaska is just in another league all together.

20 years ago, after a 3-4 year hitch as the Maint. Supervisor, EMT, and fairly decent ER tech at our local hospital, i resigned my position as they would only give, allow because of budget cutbacks, me one assistant to help with all that entails both physically and documentation wise, maintaining a old rundown but growing facility that had previously been staffed by 3.5 people. Anyway, after much gut wrenching i left that job in a position to move anywhere i wanted as both financially and health wise, was at near the top of my game. The Hospital in Homer Alaska offered me a good job...yet it is really nice here too. I didn't go. WTF was i thinking???

I'm always interested in what things there cost and what you get for your money. In fact, life there has always interested me. Joey

WELL sage!!!

FOR THE MOST PART MOST THINGS WERE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN HERE WHERE I LIVE!!!

GROCERIES WERE SPENDY!!!

8.00-10.00 A BAG FOR POTATO CHIPS!!!

BEEF IS SPENDY!!!

ONE THING THAT DID SURPRISE ME WAS SPORTSMANS WAREHOUSE IN WASILLA,THEY WERE LESS MONEY ON TACKLE THAN THEIR STORES HERE IN UTAH,KINDA MAKES YOU WONDER???

DIESEL FUEL IN THE WASSILA & ANCHORAGE AREAS WAS 3.39!!!

DOWN AROUND HOMER 3.74 PER GALLON!!!

PROPANE WAS EXPENSIVE AT 4.40 PER GALLON!!!

RV PARKS WERE ANYWHERE FROM 33.00 TO 85.00 PER NIGHT!!!

KIND'OF A ONCE IN A LIFETIME DEAL FOR ME,STILL THINKING ABOUT SAVING MY PENNIES & GOING BACK AGAIN THOUGH!!!

HALIBUT IS THE ONLY MEAT I'VE GOT THAT COSTS ME MORE THAN MY DEER MEAT,LOL!!!

YA I WISH THE KING FISHING WOULD OF BEEN BETTER BUT I TALKED TO SEVERAL GUYS THAT NEVER CAUGHT ANY KINGS,SO I'M OK WITH IT!!!

I THINK ALASKA MIGHT BE MANAGING FISH LIKE UTAH MANAGES BIG GAME!!!

I DID TALK TO 2 GUYS FROM SWEDEN THAT SPENT 20K EACH TO HUNT BLACK BEARS & GRIZZLY'S!!!

THEY GOT THEIR BLACK BEARS BUT DUE TO NO SALMON SHOWING UP ON THE RIVER WHERE THEY WERE HUNTING THEY DID NOT GET THEIR GRIZZLY BEARS!!!

WISHED I HAD DONE IT SOONER,BUT AT LEAST MY SON IS OLD ENOUGH HE WILL REMEMBER IT,HE CAUGHT A FISH AS BIG AS HE IS & THAT MADE MY TRIP!!!

LAST EDITED ON Jun-23-09 AT 07:53PM (MST)[p]Bobcat, too bad the King fishing was slow.

They actually have an early run and a late run of Kings on the Kenai. Early run is about Memorial Day until early July. The early run is fewer numbers and smaller fish, generally.

The late run is from early July to the end of July. That's when the BIG Kings show up. The worlds largest King salmon, 96 lbs. came from the Kenai. The late run is really a zoo!

Alaska actually tries to protect the Kings. Lots of restrictions and low limits. Five Kings a year and only one or two a year from the Kenai, I think.

King salmon everywhere are on the decline. I wrote them a letter a couple years ago and told them there is only one river in the world that has Kings that big. ONLY ONE in the WHOLE WORLD!!! They better do whatever it takes to keep it that way. I told them to learn from California and the rest of the US.

People from all over the world come to the Kenai hoping to catch that 80 lb. plus fish. And they spend big bucks to do it. I hope the greed for the big bucks doesn't win, because once the fish are gone they ain't comming back!

Judas Priest, now you got me all riled up Bobcat!:)

Bess, Thanks for the info! Did you drive up there? From your telling of the costs of diesel, rv'ing, propane, camping, and such, sounds like you drove a motor home or cabover up there.

If you did drive, would you do it again? Stop along the way or make time boogyen...

Anyhow, sounds like a great trip!

Eel, I've seen video and pic's of 50-60-70+ kings from there. Awesome huge and look near twice what they weigh!!! If a guy has ever hooked and landed a fresh 30 pounder in a river, it is a most awesome powerful fish and there's no doubt who's in charge...for a good while anyway. I can only imagine hooking and landing a 60+. :)

Heres a pic of the inside of the Salty Dawg,, If i remember right, If you walk inside while wearing a hat they ring a bell and you have to buy the house a round..There used to be a place out by Girdwood called the Birdhouse that had doller bills pinned to the walls, there was claims that in some places on the wall doller bills were over a foot thick,,It burned down about 5 years ago..
The pic of the Butt.. Is one my buddy caught in 2006..
