The Utah opener was was too hot, so we hit the grouse hills instead. I couldn't hold out for long and ended up going out for some chukar action last week. I tried a new spot and the dogs had a good point over a water source. I let these birds go. I won't shoot them off water. After they flushed there were birds calling all around me very high up in the cliffs. I left them there for another day. I next headed for a tried and true spot. I quickly had a point and honor on a covey and scored a quick double with each dog retrieving one bird to hand. I had one more point too close to the water for me to shoot. Saw 70-80 chukar and no snakes. They are still holding pretty tight to the water.

I had the dogs out again on Saturday. We saw about 50 birds on this trip as well as some new country. We had a few points and a few retrieves. In two trips this year, my pups have handled close to one hundred birds.

I'm in Cali so I'm off to Oregon to give it hell with my brother in a couple weeks. Either John Day area or further east. I'll post if I'm sucessful.

Here is a pic of one of my dogs on point to get you excited.
He'll be 2 in December.

Here is his sister from the same litter.

Steady to flush.

They are Honkey Tonk and Elhew bred, out of some of the best lines to be had.

Shummy, My bro runs brittnys. They'll work us harder than we work them. I'm gettin' ready to go up so I'll post the results after I get back. By the way, the first outing he had he saw over 60 birds.

I took my pup out on Sat the 7th and he busted several groups of birds. He did pick up my last 2 birds, one of which he'd flushed.

Wed, Veteran's Day I got 5 points out of him. First was on 2 birds quite a bit below him. Grandma honored for a second and then crept by kinda sayin, "Youngster, they are way up here." They didn't hold but it was beautiful. His next two points were hotspots where I seen first one birds flush from and the second about 6-7 flush from. He held that one solid for 30-45 seconds. Next point was a covey of about 30 quial. He retrieved 4 of the 5 I shot. Last point was a covey of chukar. He found both of the birds I dropped. He's the 5th pup I've started on chukar in the last 20 years, 2 of which became great bird dogs but his improvement after only 2 hunts far exceeds the rate any of them have attained in the past. I believe we'll have some set backs but he seems to learn something on every engagement with birds. I'm so impressed.

Wild birds are the ultimate teachers. I feel that if you start with good genetics, and you put your dog on wild birds, they will pretty much teach them all they need to know especially if you only shoot at pointed birds. Of course you will still have to go through the breaking process if you want them steady to wing, shot and fall.

I'm going to hit the hills this afternoon with a friend of mine. I'll give a report when we get back.

Shummy, I agree. Good instincts and LOTS of huntin. Try to get out 20-30 times a year. Big game draws messed up October this year but you can't have everything.

Got 5 today but lost 3 others. I hate losing birds, especially dead ones. One of the birds I busted a wing on, pup pointed it about 100 yards away but when he tried to fly and then ran he stayed on point. All my other dogs have been meat dogs and would never let a cripple they'd pointed get away.

He did point several coveys at extreme distance. Next trip grandma is staying home and it'll just be two of us.

We hit the hills in a new spot, it was very tough terrain. It was hard on the dogs, they are all cut and bruised. We ended the day with 2 chuks and three quail. My dogs did well, they do all I ask of them.

In my previous post, the dog was 100 yards from me. He pointed the chukar from about 10 feet. Bird jumped, couldn't fly and ran. Dog stayed on point. he'll figure it out!!!!!!!!

My wife and I went out yesterday and had the best day I've ever had hunting chukars. We hunted and area I'm positive has never been hunted before. The birds were plentiful and held very tight. It's been a long time since I've had to go in and actually flush the birds. I'll attach some pics later.

Glad you had a good one!!!!!

I got 4-5 inches of snow today/this evening. With 40 degree temps tomorrow, I'm thinking the south facing slopes will burn off by noon. High hopes for tomorrow. First snow trip for the pup.

Here is a pic from last weeks hunt. Sorry about the red rocket, birds give him a stiffy.

Dam, Shummy, that chukar has the biggest ears I've ever seen. That dog must love his work. My chukar hunt in Oregon took a sour note as my bro broke his collar bone. He say we can still go but him not being able to shoot just won't be the same.

Sorry to hear about the collar bone, I've broke mine twice and It was one of the most painfull bones I've ever broken, and I've broken pretty much all of them.
The rabbits made a pretty tastey batch of chile verde!

Saturday was the pup's first solo hunt. Perfect conditions. About 4-5 inches of fresh snow. First covey I walked into and they held and I didn't even know they were there. Pup was too far out so I held up for about a minute and a half. He hadn't checked me once. I went to duck down so he'd have to hunt for me and they jumped. Surprised me. I knocked one down but wasn't sure where. He came in downwind, nose to where they had been and tail back rigid. Real birdy and I couldn't get him off of where they had been. Finally I called him over a couple of times and he found the bird.

Next covey was a classic point and they held. Poor/slow shootin resulted in a dead bird and one that barely made it over a dropoff about a 100 yards away. He picked up the dead bird. I took him to the downwind end of the dropoff and he disappeared behind some brush. I went down to where I thought he was and he was on point. I picked up the crip there. We chased 2 that went the direction I wanted to go. I got a quick point and the bird jumped. It went down hard but I saw it running about 20 yards past where it hit. He went over the ledge and when I got there he had the bird. First time he'd picked up a cripple without a point.

Next one I saw him 150 yards out, directly into the wind and birdy. He disappeared over the hill. When I got there he was coming towards me. He saw me and went right where he was coming from. A quick point and about 12 birds coming towards me. 3 shots later I hadn't pulled a feather!!!! Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I believe he was on the birds, came off to find me and then went back to them. My old dog does that often, why I've always let her range. Those were the First birds that didn't hold for him since his first hunt.

I had visions of a Kali limit and then a NV limit that AM. Instead I went back to the quad with 4 birds and thinking of moving a few miles to NV. After getting there, the 4 hours of slipping on snow covered rocks had taken it's toll and I talked myself into callin it a day and getting home early.

I think Friday he'll get to hunt by himself and Sun grandma and him will chase some quail for a change.

I went out yesterday too! I had a vey tough day with high winds and nasty country. We managed to scratch down two birds. The dogs did what they were supposed to including running down a cripple. I hiked a long way, but it proved unproductive. My dogs need some rest, they are in pretty bad shape. I'm going to let them sit until Saturday.

Miserable day!!! Started off cold, dry snow. Changed to rain, then about 3" of wet snow. Only one bird out of the first 3 coveys. a couple out of each of the next two, then one out of the last covey. Plenty of birds but they didn't cooperate well. It was the pup's first solo limit.

Soaked to the bone then an hour quad ride back to the truck.

I had one of those days yesterday where I should of left the gun at home and brought the camera instead.
The dog pointed 7 different coveys and multiple singles and doubles saw upwards of 250 birds all together. Managed to scratch up a limit, but what should have taken 20 minutes I managed to stretch out for 3 hours because of my shooting skills. The dog was amazing I was not. On the way home we swung into some Pheasant cover and Zeke went on point immediately, I kicked up the bird and let it get out to 25 yards and dropped it Zeke retrieved it and we called it a day.

Nice combo.

The quail hunt was a disappointment for the pup. He ranged so far I couldn't see him most of the time. I did get a couple of points and he found a couple of dead birds. I took most of the birds over the old dog. BUT at one time she pointed and he was about 25 yards away on point. Knocked 2 down over her and then 2 down over him. Only recovered 2 of the 4 though. Lost 4 birds total today so although I was into lots of birds and knocked alot down, it was disappointing. For several years I NEVER lost birds once the ground got moist.

I wasn't going to introduce him to a electronic collar til after this season but have to decide to either not hunt quail with him or introduce him. I park next to a highway and got into about 60 birds right off the bat. I was worried he'd get on the road. He listens well EXCEPT when he's birdy.

Chukar huntin I love his range as he'll hold till I get there. In fact, I wish he'd creep with me when I get there but he holds and I have to figure where the birds are. Grandma creeps and the last time I hunted them both together on chukar, he was learning from her but the last two chukar trips he holds as I go by him and till I shoot.

I guess they'll both go with me Fri.

Good luck guys. It seems there are alot of birds this year.

Hello chukar hunters
Well i'm new here, my first post ever,so lets see what i can
do.Hunted chukars 10/10/09 nevada opener, scouted 3 days hunted 3 days.Lots of birds, anywhere from 8 bird covey to 80 birds.
I had limits all 3 days,only 3 birds of 18 were adults.
My dog is a gwp.his name is chuck 3 year old.a little hard headed but he can cover ground.
good luck to all

Winnemucca, I've had GWPs for 20+ years until I got a GSP pup this year, and his name is Chuck. I still hunt my old (13 this Feb) female GWP occasionally. Conservatively 1,200 birds over her in her life. Mostly chukar but some quail and a few pheasants.

I heard from a friend, who met a avid chukar on a deer hunt last week that the chukar huntin outta Winnemucca this year was "almost too easy." Planning either 2 3day hunts or one 5 day hunt in first couple of weeks of Jan. Probably hit some spots outta Winne and then some spots outta Battle Mountain.

Anyways, welcome aboard!!!!!!!

Spent some time up Blacksmith Fork this weekend. Definitely a big diffence in pheasant shape and chukar shape! Spent about 5 hrs covering some areas that have held birds in the past and came up zeros! You guys are really making me jealous. Thanks for the updates.

Califelkslayer, I live in northern cali small town,Maxwell
in colusa county. We try to get over to nevada 5 or 6 times for
chukars & coyotes.Like to see snow for next trip.
Last year we took more coyotes than chukar.Found birds north of elko, last week of season real tough year for us.
good luck.

Friday I hunted 4 hours for 4 birds. Messed up early by shootin a single the dog pointed and a covey of about 40 flew about 120 yards below us. Just a bad setup. Picked up 3 more, all singles. THEN got a point, 3 jumped and I dinged one and a second round didn't chamber. Got nothing outta that.

After some lunch at the quad, I decided to move a few miles into Kali. Dog got birdy about 400 yards from the quad, got into one covey of about 30-35 birds real good. While huntin up singles, I got a point on a covey of about 18. Ended up with 5 more on a short hour and a half hunt. Puls I had birds spread out and another covey chucking below me. Decided to head back to the quad as I had to be in town by 6:30 and figured I'd probably pick up another bird on the way back anyways. NOT! A nine bird day was good enough.

Think I'm cancelling my plans for this Monday and going to work instead. I only hunt during blizards if it's the only day I can get out all week.

Boy did I have a tough day today. I heard a rumor that a box canyon actually opened up into a pretty neat bowl. I decided to see if it was true. I wasn't going to hunt it, just look around but as I pulled in a covey flushed and split up. I thought I might be able to pick up some singles so I put the dogs on the ground. The canyon does open up, but it's very tough. I spent most of the day above the sheep, and the birds were down in the bottoms of the washes, where they aren't supposed to be. I guess that with all the snow, that is where they have to go for food. I saw a good number of birds, but I was only able to scratch down one. It was really the only one I had a shot at.

We've had snow and/or sub-zero temps since last Sat. Planning on this monday for my next hunt.

Last night I discovered that my camera is gone. I had it Fri the 4th and took pics of my dog on point. I put it in my coat pocket instead of the inner zipper pocket of my vest. Then I rode my quad 20.3 miles back to the truck. Loaded dog and quad, took coat off. Sun I wore coat for several hours while I plowed snow on quad. Again on Mon. Last night I went to charge camera and remove SD card so I could print pics. NO CAMERA!!

Longshot I'll ever find it. Worst thing is my Nevada elk hunt pics are on it and not on the computer. AND my buddy that helped on the hunt told me Wednesday night he wanted some 8X10 pics. Darn!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, it looks like my season is done. I re-injured an old work injury. I've got some torn ligaments in my right hand. I meet with the surgeon on Monday. Total and complete suckage.

Shummy, Sorry to hear about that. Hope it heals like new.

Today was tough. 6" of snow everywhere. First 3 hours only 2 coveys. 1st one I shot like crap, actually shot like crap all day. Long story short, I hunted 4 hours before I really got into em. Then I was tired of slippin on the rocks, knees hurting, so instead of chasin em, I hunted back to the quad.

Only got 3. One I knocked down, pup pointed and he flew away. another I marked and couldn't find him or his tracks. Missed several give-me shots. So bringing 3 home was what I deserved based on my performance, pup deserved better than that.

I thought last monday was bad, slippin on snow covered rocks and poor shootin. Today was worse.

I had everything loaded last night except the dog and was just gettin to bed when I got called into work. We had a "walk away" from one of our fire camps. I stayed until 0900 hrs this mornin. After being up 29 hours I didn't have the energy to go huntin.

Sleep is overrated but necessary at some point.

But they caught the guy this afternoon.

The orthepedic surgeon did not seem to completely agree with the ER diagnosis. I'm going to try and hunt in the morning. The weather has been beautiful so I can't wait to get out.

Sorry to hear about the injury Shummy, hope it heals quick.

Went out yesterday in the snow, lots of fresh tracks but the birds were a little jumpy. First 3 coveys got up with out a shot. Picked up a double on a couple stragglers then a single out of the next covey. Managed to miss 4 times at the next 2 coveys, then picked up one more on a long crossing shot to finish with 4. Should of limited but that is usually the case for me. The dog loves to hunt Chukar but looks like he banged up one of his toes pretty bad in the rocks. ( swollen and red)
Won't put much wait on it. Hopefully nothing serious.
Chased roosters in 5" of fresh snow last weekend and just knocked the crud out of em. I will post a few pics later.

Here are a few pics from the last couple of weekends in Eastern Washington. Sorry about throwin roosters in a Chukar thread but I thought some might like the pics.
This is Zeke on yesterdays Chukar hunt.

Hunted the old dog with the pup today. Got 6 but not sure that huntin them together was a good idea. Got 2 double points but on the first one the pup busted the covey just as I got there, competition I guess. Second time the older dog busted. Neither EVER do that alone.

And I wore new boots today, heels sore after 2 hours, took me 5+ to get a limit and get back to the quad, OUCH!!!!

Won't be huntin tomorrow, hope they heel by Wed cuss I got plans.

3 of us went out saturday, and hunted some land I have eyeballed but never hunted. We saw 250 to 300 birds and were 2 shy of our limit. They were awful spooky but the singles and doubles filled our vests. The bad news.. my GSP may have a broken toe and my right knee has finally given up. Two appointments on monday the vet then the doc.

Shummy/Ironhead, Sorry to hear about injuries but that's why we chase the damn things ain't it??? An easy chukar hunt is equal to any other tough hunt. And a tough chukar hunt is a survival exercise.

That said, tomorrow is another day in the field. Got about 2" of fresh dry stuff this evening. Perfect conditions if I don't kill myself on the rocks. Gave the old dog glucosomine, aspirin and Ester C. Another dose in the morning and I'll have two dogs. Got 5.5 hours outta her Sat in cold conditions with snow to eat.

Good luck everyone, only one month left. Lookin at the calendar, I'll get in another 9-10 hunts. With luck push 100 birds without huntin Oct.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-29-09 AT 09:26PM (MST)[p]Fantastic/Frustrating/Cold day.

Got out early with intentions of doin em in Kali and Nevada. It was foggy all day. In the AM there were times visibility was less than 100 yards. I was pi$$ed at the pup cause he was outta sight 80% of the time, and I heard birds flush a couple of times in the distance. 1-2" of fresh snow but the birds were on south facing slopes exclusively where they could get through the new stuff. Problem was, I never saw the sun all day so findin S. facin slopes wasn't that easy all the time.

In Kali I got into birds early and often. I shoulda been done quick but I made a project outta it with my shooting. I did manage to make it back to the quad in about 3 hours plus got a covey point from the pup after I had my 6 so I took some pics.

Nevada was another story. Shootin got better later but the first 2 hours I was climbin and the birds were above us except for one covey the pup pointed at distance and when the old dog went by her, pup broke. I still shoulda had one on a give me shot but missed that too. After we topped out we immediately got into 3 coveys in half an hour and one bird to show for it. I then made 2 doubles on great covey rises. Finished with one outta a pair. An hour and a half back to the quad in a short snow storm. I unloaded the quad in the dark and loaded it in the dark, long day!!!! Figured I walked for 7 1/2 hours to get 12 birds when I coulda cut that in half with some decent shootin. I figure I jumped 13 coveys, 4 of them twice. 17 covey rises to take 12 birds ain't that good. A few resulted in no shots, either due to one of the 2 dogs bustin em, or once I out smarted myself and came in for the flush 50 yards left of the dogs cause thats were "it looked like they'd be."

If I could hunt chukar for a couple of months before big game season, I could cover some ground.

Apparently some of you are just overrun with the devil birds. I can't remember the last time I shot a limit. It's also a very rare thing to jump the same covey twice, the country is just to nasty. I have been out a few times since I last reported, and as usual I've bagged a few birds and seen some great dog work. I've also spent some time with good friends. We've shared some laughs and good conversation over the years and having like minded individuals to hunt with really makes the experience that much better. Some day I hope to make the journey to the apparent chuckar mecca that you all live in and shoot a few birds with you.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-04-10 AT 06:25PM (MST)[p]LAST EDITED ON Jan-04-10 AT 06:23?PM (MST)

I got spanked by the red legged devil birds on friday.I put 14.2 boot miles on for one bird. The fog rolled in on us and the vis was only 20 yards at the most. I should have headed for the barn but we had driven 140 miles to get there, and my German hard headedness got the best of me. Every bird but one got up on the edge of the fog line, I could hear them but couldn't see them.
The Chukar got best of me this year, my LCL has a tear in it and will have to be repaired during the offseason. I shot 53 chukar this year in 16 trips and put 96 miles on my Lowa sheep hunters. Friday was my last Chukar hunt of the year, our season closes on Jan The 17th but my son is having some major surgery next week in either San Diego or Bethesda MD, he was wounded Aug 6th in Afghanistan. So Shummy and Cali, hope you guys finish strong and have a great off season.

Ironhead, like Shummy said, Thank your son for us!!!!

And Shummy, you are welcome anytime!!!

Last weekend was a trip to Battle Mountain. We got into alot of birds. Friday my partner got 4 and I got 3. Saturday we changed roles and I got 4 and he got 3. Man did I cover some ground!!! Sunday his achilles was acting up, his good dog was shot and I was lookin for an excuse not to torchure myself anymore so we left early. Once again my shootin sucked!!!

Today I took him and another guy out to my "Border" spot. He got a limit pretty early, I worked for a limit and the other guy got one and lost 2. Not sure why I have to climb to the top, hunt the 3rd ridge from the quad and let them have the first two ridges but no regrets.

Plus I shot like I'm used to today. Missed a couple of birds, ususally due to poor footin (my normal excuse) But I got a 1 and a 2 out of the coveys that got pointed and all of the singles. Pup was on his game today.

Monday they are callin for 100 mile an hour winds so I might be a no show. 2 weekends after that. The total is an even 70 right now.

Good luck guys.

Things have changed in my area and I can't figure it out, the birds have disappeared! I hunted four days this week and I haven't seen a bird. I've walked close to 60 miles and I'm sure the dogs have coverd hundreds. I've tried high and low and they are gone, it's really strange. I've got a late season honey hole that I always put off because it's so steep. I'm gonna go try there and see whats up. I did, however, find an illegal trap line with two trapped foxes that had obviously been there for days. The traps weren't tagged like they have to be to be legal! I'm very upset about it mainly because the foxes had suffered pretty bad!

Good luck.

I'm sittin tomorrow out due to the weather. I have hunted in downright blizzards before and have done surpisingly well but after the good season we've had, and the amount of times I've been out recently, I'm takin a break.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-30-10 AT 05:59PM (MST)[p]On Saturday the 23rd I hunted the ridge I showed the guy the weekend before and he only took one. Damn, fantastic hunt!!!

Almost took me as long to get to the ridge and back as it took to kill 6. Got great photos after that on 3 different points. A single, a pair and a covey that got up staggered. Wish it had been video.

Sunday the wife decided to work so out to the first ridge. Got em in a good spot, shot well, it was over in a couple a hours.

Wednesday the 27th I begged a day off and did it again BUT worked my tail off for 4 birds. Hunted both the above mentioned ridges. Birds were wild, I got frustrated, birds won.

Today I got revenge!! last weekend of Kali season. Got a limit there and a couple in NV. 40 for January and 96 for the season. Gonna hunt at least one more time. Want to get a pic or two of the pup and old dog pointing/honoring. Everytime It's happened I was more worried about shootin than pics. Old dog is 13 in Feb so it'll be her last hunt and I really want a picture of the two of em. Might get to the century mark also.

You lucky bugger! The birds have vanished from around here, it is extremely weird, I can't figure it out.

Season closed in WA on the 17th of Jan. I am already jonesin. I will chase steelhead until late March. Cali sounds like you had a hell of a year. Shummy you ever hunt Idaho?

Kinda weird the success I've had this year. A couple of guys I work with and I compare notes throughout the season every year. Most years we are within 10 birds of each other by the end of the season, regardless of how the huntin is. This year one guy's got skunked 5Xs just in january.

At least 12 of my hunts have been within 5 miles of each other, high early, low later. I gave some thought to overhuntin em but the last Sat I saw 180 birds. Time before, on that ridge and another one, about the same amount.

This Sat will be an adventure. Only NV's open and the area I'm plannin on goin to I haven't been into in 5-6 weeks. Have only seen one set of tracks headed that way a couple of weeks ago. There's a north facing slope where the snow drifts deep. Enlisted a friend so I don't have to spend the night alone in the desert. :) Gonna add a couple of MREs on my quad too.

Hoping for a pic of both dogs on point, and some birds that haven't seen pressure for a month or two.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-05-10 AT 07:55AM (MST)[p]Ironhead, I've never hunted Idaho but I would like to. In fact I just sent my resume to a company located in Nampa so it might be in my future!

Got the birds but not the picture.

First covey pup pointed 120 yards uphill of me. I thought they'll run to the top but at least I'll be on top, nope. He was over em so after I closed to within about 60 yards, they flushed towards me. One dead and one hit hard. We started towards where it went and I got another point. Uphill again. Won't get lucky twice. I closed to about 40 yards and they got up and flew right by me. Got a double and should have had 4. A couple went towards the snowy side, north slope. I went after them cause I figured they wouldn't run much in deep, slushy snow. Pup on point, me on his heels, pair gets up. Now I got five.

I go back towards where I started gettin into birds and meet up with my partner. His setter is on point. I get great pic of her on point and him about 5 yards on the other side on her. Pair flushes, he misses twice and then I shoot. Now I got a limit an hour and 20 minutes off the quad. He has nothing.

Next 4 hours no more shooting. My pup honored his setter on a point but the birds were gone.

And I almost got the pic I wanted. Pup on point, grandma goes by and lockes up. I'm 80 yards away. I get a rock between me and the birds and hustle up. As I'm gettin the camera out, grandma busts and then pup. Birds flush and I'm disappointed.

I did use the collar on pup today for the first time. I let him range as far as he wanted but not out of sight. As he got ready to disappear, I'd tone him. Had to zap him twice and now he responds to the tone well.

On the way back we got downwind of 4 burros. He winded em and started towards em. I yelled, he ignored me. I toned him and he broke stride and then kept going. Zap!! He learned. Great learning day for him.

For the season pup had 102 chukar and 13 quail taken over him. Most on solo hunts. He's getting pretty damn good but then I'm biased like any father. :)

Need 8 months to rest/heal up for next year but I can't wait.

Shummy, there is some killer Chukar and Hun hunting in that area, I usually bird hunt over there 3 or 4 times a year. The bird numbers are un real. I have also been thinking about moving to that area but the economy is still pretty descent here and I have a couple big jobsgoing right now. Housing prices look pretty reasonable there.
Good luck

It looks like the whole town is under forclosure. If I sold my house here i could almost pay cash there. Gotta wait for a job offer first...
