Chukar results?????

I've been doing great! I've got a post going about it below. My wife shot her first chukar yesterday!

Cool. I saw your post but wasn't sure if 75 birds and 50 birds is up or down from what you usually see in those areas.

Only report I got from NE Kali/NW Nevada was "below normal." But that was hearsay. I need to see for myself.

Good luck Shummy. I'll let you know how my season goes. And I'm gonna take pics of my dogs this year. Hope I actually learn how to get them on here. I enjoyed the pics of yours.

I just went to NDOW, Click on Hunt NV and read the chukar forecast. Promising.

Their info has been pretty accurate the 15 years. Usually see in the field what they forecast.

That is about an average number of birds. It was close to 90 degrees yesterday so we were only able to run the dogs for a few hours. I hate to say it, but we need some cooler weather. One of the guzzlers I checked was dry.

Woke up with a screamin headache @ 5 this morning. Slept til 10, piddled around and didn't leave til 11:00. Got to my spot @ 1345 hrs. 3 Quads there. Too late to go elsewhere plus I just wanted to get the pup into birds. 1550 hrs I had 6. Plus I only got 1 on the second and third covey rise respectively.

Old dog will be 13 in FEB but she did great as usual. Pup actually picked up birds #5 and #6. Not complete retrieves but he's real interested!!!! Bird #6 was one of 4 he busted and it flew the wrong way. Smart dog. He hunts himself but has an eye on grandma all the time too. He just didn't point today and actually bust 2 small bunches.

Several very young birds, promising season.

Good conditions. Cool and breezy but not too hard as I found the birds on the windy side of the ridge. Actually grandma did. Glucomine/aspirin/Ester C again this year.

Didn't take any action pics although I got the camera out. Grandma turned into the wind after I was done. 300 yards then out of sight. Pup in front of me. When I got there they were both coming back up. I imagine the pup busted the birds. I'll work on his pointing this week but I'm not concerned as it was his first time and that's the most excited I've ever seen him. Confident he'll get it.

I did get a pic of him and the birds after the hunt since it was his first.

Is this the pup you were having trouble with? If so, it sounds like you got the problem worked out. I like wild birds, they make your dog honest. I'll bet your pup won't bust too many more coveys, the light will come on and the point will be solid.

Shummy, no it isn't.

The one that is/was gunshy is a female GWP. The new pup is a male GSP. And the old one is a female GWP. I still have the young female GWP. I shot a skunk over her this summer and no hint of gunshyness. I worked with both pups this summer with a cap gun as you suggested. I think that did it although I haven't had the female on birds yet this year.

I'm focussing on the male as he seems to be the easiest to work with. And his range is more to my liking.

I thought last year was the last I could use my old dog. She is doing as well physically as she did last year. I'm taking the it real slow with the male GSP. Funny disposition. Not very agressive for a male. No electric collar for him. I'm planning on waiting till he's so interested in birds he won't associate the two, probably introduce the collar after this season. My old dog has never worn a collar.

I'm hoping you're right about him bustin birds and I remember pups I had before that began that way and steadied outquickly. I'll keep you posted as I'm gonna get out Wed and Sat.
