Hi Guys! I pulled out the feather box, flashabou, threads, maribou, and the rest, this am and in in the process of re-stocking my supply of spring Trout and smallmouth bass getters. Nothing too fancy, i'm no master tier, or flyfisher for that matter, but it's nice to catch stuff on flies and Jigs that come from your own vice, invention, and imagination.

I like to fish my creations deep and sometimes in pretty rough cover. Usually, i go thru quite a few pieces in a season as that's where the fish are, and the snags too unfortunetly.

Was wondering if any fellow members also tie their own stuff, maybe have a recommendation, or possibly share through a photo of what they can do.

Big Rainbows and Browns, 3-10 pounds and Big Smallies 3-6 pounds are my quarry. I usually get my share.

Thanks! Joey

Joey,I tie some up in the winter. Mostly crappie & smallmouth jigs, 1/16 & 1/32. Also tie quite a few on roadrunner heads. For bluegill I tie a 1/64 using chukar. Good little minnow look in the water. In your area wild turkey was one of my favorites. Those smallie's in the stumps would clobber a jig under a bobber!

No jigs, but I tie up bass streamers and poppers. Nothing like early morning bass on a hand tied popper... lay it out there, strip it twice, and wait for the explosion..

this guy lasted one morning.

I pour and tie a few different types of lead jigs for bass fishing...If you fish a lot it can save you money and it is fun to do..I just bought a cheap jig tying vise...it sure made it easier and faster....

Here's a couple football heads I tied...

Thanks Guys!!

Murphy, I've done just that with jig and bobber out by Catfish beach and the connecting "island". They, PG&E, closed off the access though for us shore fishing guys in that whole area but i still hit it right with a bud once in awhile.

ASavage, Good looking popper!! I've not tried tying those yet. Going back tom my youth, i caught many nice sized largemouth bass right before dark, plopping a hula-popper along close to a steep bank in the gravel pits of my home town. Very exciting stuff but these smallmouth around here, to my knowledge anyway, aren't caught that easy so often with surface stuff. I probably ought to try it more often just in case cause nothing is more fun! My go to combo is my creation in a +2" long streamer cast w/ a 5 weight cabelas pack rod. Some days, they flat wear me out :)

BS, Good looking Jigs! I've threatened myself to start pouring my own for years not but already have too many Irons in... :) The price of jig heads was crime like cheap years ago when i first caught on to Gets-its. Now, at least in the local stores,
seems they want way more than they are worth.

I was just now putting all the tying stuff away. Be nice to have a place to keep it all set up and handy year round. Once you get the basics and a few kinda pricey feather purchases done, it's really economical. Jigs, streamers, poppers, or flies, you can tie your own for pennies on the dollar, they'll catch fish,eventually,...and it's fun!! :)

Been tying now for 40 + years. Still get a kick out of it. I don't tye many jigs. Mostly flies was an instructor for many years. Back in the early days we didn't use much synthetic. I remember when ya could by 5 lbs of stripped peacock hearl for a couple bucks. I have narrowed it down to a dozen or so that work 50% of the time the other 90% of the time they don't work.. That is when the fish are biting.

Been tying flies myself for a few years, mainly the small stuff (size 18 down to 28) for fishing on the San Juan here in NM. Buying all the materials almost broke the bank, but it beats paying up to 2 bucks a fly in the shops. Crappy peacock herl is running 2 bucks for maybe 75 strands or so now? Ah the good ole days...haha

rutnbuck and philthy, Thanks for your replies guys and not taking offense at the thought of tying jigs! Tying flies really is fun, i agree. Though i've been fly fishing for over 40 years, I've only been tying my own for 15 years or so. I had a mentor that passed away not too long ago. He was a master tier though i'd pretty much hold my own against him out on the stream while fishing. Anyway, we spent countless hours fishing and tying together but, in those days, i think we partied too much most of the time for me to remember much. :) I'm pretty bad color blind and tying is one hobby where being able to see and distinguish colors is fairly important.

I've tried my hand at the smaller stuff 18's thru high 20's but have to take my hat off to you guys that can do them well. Fortunately for me, my mentor was a generous sort and he left me well stocked with most of what i can see needing in the near future anyway. It's all good, thanks for speaking up, and i'm hoping to get a few good hook-ups on the lake tomorrow!

Good thread.. I have been tying flies and jigs for close to 35 years, no doubt it has it's rewards..
Just spun up a hundred Russian river flies using some hair off some deer elk and javelina i shot..Dyed the hair myself and now my hands are as red as the flies..
