Tageater got a thread going about fishing and that got me thinking about some of the flies I've tied in the past. I used some strange materials, one of the best flies came out of the lint in the seatcover of my old '72 chevy truck. It had white and blue and red, and black colors in it and pockets all along the front and they would collect lint from the cover, so I dug it out and tied flies with it, just little nymphs, alot like a hare's ear. Caught the crap outta the fish too!! I'd try black, brown, grey, olive, and not do too well, then I'd throw on the lint fly and whammo!! Then I tried lint from the dryer, doesn't work worth a crap. There was something about the seatcoaver fibers that made for great flies.

I was headed over to a buddies house and they had one of those orange and white cats, well right by his front door was a piece of this cat, maybe it got in a fight, I dunno, got me a nice chunk of cat hair, took it home and made a wooly bugger with it, took it up on the local river and booyah!! I'll never forget the look on my buddies face when I asked him if I could have the cat hair!

I know there's more, I just gotta remember....

LAST EDITED ON Jun-19-11 AT 04:58PM (MST)[p]99.5% of all my flies are tied with fly tying materials...usually not in any kind of subscribed method---

But there was the year that I stepped into the mother of all patterns for a particular river. My brothers were having trouble
Catching a dozen fish a day, and I was in the 30-40 fish a day.

I knew the next year they'd all want a dozen of that pattern, so before we went I set out to tie them some of the special pattern. The flies they got weren't exactly the same as the ones I was using, and my young brother noticed the difference and asked why theirs had short curly haired tails?!!!

DOH!!!!!! That's just WRONG on every level. Gotta try that one...in fact, I may need to do that before my trip this week.

I found some white, semi-transparent, glittery, tight netting material, as part of a roll of Christmas ribbon at Wally world. Think i gave 88 cents for the whole roll. Cut and shaped on a long hook, it really looks like a minnows body. Chain link eyes, the body, a little epoxy, and a shortish maribou tail, this thing catches fish!

Albino Bald Eagle feathers work the best! I remember when there was no such thing as synthetic materials.

I was Elk hunting in Idaho 5 or 6 years ago and we decided to fish the Big Wood River during a mid day break. I was fly fishing and caught two 14" cut bows. My buddy comes out of the willows with 5 nice cut bows on a stick. He shows me his rig.
A willow stick 6' of mono and an egg hook. Come to find out those Big Wood fish prefer cheese over bugs.
