After 2 stellar years I'm wondering how they are doing this year? Anybody have any info on their observations?

My only input is I saw quail with 12 chicks on 7/01 which is normal around here. BUT this AM I saw a momma quail with only one chick. And the chick was only a day or 2 old.

SE Idaho or down the river towards Bronlee? as dry as it is down south I'm expecting problems. I hope I'm wrong.

How big are the chicks? I saw some quail today that are not over a week old.

I've seen more quail the last few days, everything from tiny, hopping, golf ball size to 1/2 grown ones. Thinking we'll be alright.

up here in lewiston idaho its going to be an incredible year we have been have consistent rain and it did wonders for all the game birds and antler growth

My dogs are at summer camp in Payette, Idaho. I've been told they are finding 40 bird coveys! I can't wait!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-11-12 AT 07:30PM (MST)[p]nvthrt, glad to hear that. Don't mind travelling a few extra miles, if necessary.

I was on the "Lost" fire this week. Near where I've hunted before, just never in those canyons. I saw fresh feathers, old poop and one of my crew saw a good sized covey. Anyways, some new country to hit this fall.

We'll all know after opening weekend.

Pics from a mid-January trip when I took a novice with me. He hung tough and enjoyed himself.

And the whole crew the next day. 12 birds and back in time to watch the 9ers beat the Saints. After the hunt the day before they were good with getting back in time to watch the 9ers. Die-hard 9ers fans.

Nevada chukar report isn't too promising BUT they compare it to 09-10 and although I didn't get to hunt until 11/07/09 that year, I killed 102 over a pup. I'm thinking that when I get back from Wyoming in late oct, me and that pup(now 3 1/2 yrs old with 402 chukar under his belt) will try to prove the report wrong. I know he's game.

IMO no matter how much training a dog gets, nothing substitutes time in the field, doing what they are bred to do. Therefore a minimum of 30 days in the field again this year regardless of the hatch.

Hatch in NE Oregon must have been way down, I've been hunting the same area for years and it was the worst I've ever seen. very windy and dry last weekend which could account for some of it, but I moved to sheltered areas with water and results were similar.

A buddy hunted deer in SE Oregon in an area he often sees 100's of birds, said in 6 days he didn't see one chuckar.

I guess on the bright side less chuckar means even less hunters.

Two hunts, not so good. The first was in my "favorite" area. 50% burned up. One big, wild covey. Either a bunch of pressure or old birds because of a lack of a hatch. Second hunt, 7 hours walking for 2 coveys. Dry conditions. Saw bird fresh bird sign in 3 spots, and got up coveys in two of them. Not easy like the last 3 years, but as was said above, by December I won't see many others in the desert.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-20-12 AT 10:12PM (MST)[p]2 days south of Winnemuca. Very tough. Saturday there were 11 of us, with 9 dogs. We shotgunned seperately to different areas. Everyone saw birds, but only 6 got done in. In my case some missed opportunities resulted in only 2 birds. Others seemed to have similiar results. Battle Mountain next??????

nvthrt, I should have listened to you. I spent all winter doing home improvements instead of hunting. In the process I gained 15 lbs.

Then I hunted 3 days last weekend. West of Winnemucca I hunted last year's survivors, again! Killed 2 on Sat. But one was the biggest chukar I ever killed. Double spurs on him. I move to Battle Mountain. Got into a decent number of birds (80-100) and 5 of the 6 were this years hatch. Monday was a scouting trip and in 4 hours I saw one dried chukar turd. Won't hunt that steep SOB again. Should have gone east 2 months earlier. Didn't relize how much I missed it until I tore myself and the dogs up for 3 days. The pup is a retrieving fool. Can't wait til next year and won't let this happen again.
