South Dakota Pheasants

I would like some info on pheasant hunting South Dakota, North Dakota, Kansas, Nebreska, etc.

Won't be this year with a couple of "almost" guaranteed tags, but would like the scoop so I can plan for next year.

I'd like realistic costs, how to access land, etc. I plan to pull a 5th wheel there with the wife. If things come together, we would spend 2 weeks in Alberta waterfowl hunting, then a couple of weeks hunting pheasants somewhere in the mid-west. I've told myself my shorthairs will get the opportunity to experience the same type of pheasant hunting I experienced in the 80s in the Central Valley. And at 2 and 4 now, I need to make this happen in "14" or "15."

Please PM me if you're willing to share this type of info.

Always got room for another bird hunter.

Hunter i'm looking to make a similar trip next year. After all these years of out of state Big game hunts gonna try something a little different. I want to make it a Montana/South Dakota combo haven't worked out any details yet and I have a ton of research i need to do but getting excited at the thought of it.
With only one Dog not sure how he will handle the Wild birds but should be a fun experience.

That why they call SD the Pheasant capitol of the World.
Slow and easy hunt with one dog are good it does wear them out as fast. If you hunt huge areas with lots of people and dogs you will wear that single dog down in a hurry.

We use 6-7 dogs in a week long hunt some dogs can last longer then others. having your dog in shape before a hunt is the ticket to some great hunting and fun times with your dog.
Road working your dog for getting into shape should be 3 or more times a week.

If you want to hunt SD get in touch. Be happy to help.

we usually go the around the 1st and 2nd week of Nov, But the wife told me I COULDN'T miss her birthday this year so I'm here until that day is done then I'm on the road. Plus Oct. is usually filled up with deer and elk hunt a most of time.

It seem to work better for us because all the neighbors farms have family and friends that hunt the early part of the season( Oct), so by the time we get there they don't have any hunters still coming, so we are able to pick all the blue chip spots on those farms and hunt them, We take back some smoked hams and such to thanks them for let us use the places and it seem to work out.

Oilcan, hard to see Chuck's coloring with the vest on but very similiar to your pup's. You might have seen him when we met in 5B? I don't think I let him out of the kennel though.

Gator, I'm going to really pick your brain soon. I'm going to do the SD hunt in 2015.

Seabear, thats for the PM and info.

Hunter

Thats a pretty point. Love seeing them doing what they love.

Man, you guys are getting me stoked for chukar season, can't wait.

I get this feeling every year. The rut elk hunt just seems to get in the way of what I really love.

But Hunter, just keep telling yourself that the elk hunt is only a 10-12 days with travel and upland season lasts 4 months.

OK, OK, I think I can handle it.

Good luck everyone.

Oil, here's a couple of pics of Chuck in his younger days, without the vest. Similiar coloring, I think. And one of my lil girl too.

SD was a rough go this year, we did alright on bird numbers, But 2 days it was brutal cold with temp 4 and 7 with 20 mph winds.
Those was a couple of rough days for the dogs and us. LOL

Ended up just over 40 birds for the group so it wasn't bad nor was it outstanding. Some days was a lot better then others(shooting). I think everyone got birds and had some great times.
The best thing was the amount of hens we saw and kicked up, Now if they can make it thru the winter and have a good hatch.
we shot some young birds(5-6) that was just turning color (3 week of Nov.) Now they was a really late hatch.
We had a little snow and a lot of cold nights(teens).
Saw some great dog work and some good shooting and some really bad shooting too, I wouldn't name ,names But you know who you are LOL.

Gator glad you guys had a good time especially with the bad reports coming from that area.

I really hope ( and plan ) on making it up there next year with my Pup. He is 7 1/2 months old now and is really starting to figure this game out.I'll post a few pictures within a few day's.

A couple Roosters from the other day he had solid points and retrieved to hand. Still needs work and a lot more experience on birds but off to a good start.

Very nice, Love seeing those roosters on the ground like that.
Beautiful looking pup.
