Awhile back I was at the range watching a guy cuss up a storm about how crappy his White Super 91 was grouping. He told me that he was going to stop at the first pawn shop he came to to get rid of it on his way home. I asked him how much he wanted for it and he said, "since it's going to need a new barrel I'll sell it to you for $100." I paid him and I never saw him again. I've spent a lot of time behind this gem and she shoots amazing.

My load: 460 grain No Excuses bullet with 95 grains of Pyrodex P
sighted in at 100 yards open sight with a Lyman peep with 1/4 MOA adjustment turret and factory front site.

This picture is at 300 yards. All the bottom marks are my sons .280 the top three are my muzzy shots. 3 1/2 inch group.

This picture is my 400 yard group of 4 shots and an adjustment of 43 MOA and still 1000 foot pounds of energy.

I'm loving my cheap muzzleloader that "shoots like crap."

Sweet. One mans junk is another mans treasure. Id be on cloud 9 if I could shot my muzzleloader that good.

I'll give you $200 for it. Where else can you get 100% return on your money!

Your a lucky dog, I used to live next door to doc white. I that is the same load he told me to use on my whitetail series muzzy. They are awesome guns.

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

I own a G-Series White .504. How do the whitetail and the G-series compare? Does one shoot better than the other (I have always been happy with mine)

I bought a Knight mK85 54 cal stainless/laminate the same way for the same money. The Knight shoots good for me,but the guy that sold it thought it was a piece of crap.

I have a good friend that loves his White rifle .

That is good shooting ,especially with out a scope.

Heck,I could not see good enogh to even attempt that kind of shooting.

I have set it up so that the very top of my front sight is my aiming point otherwise my bead was covering the entire sawhorse at 400 yards.

Good shooting marly. What is the twist on your barrel. I am in the process of building a custom 50 cal muzzleloader with a 1:20 twist barrel and was curious to thoughts on no excuses bullets out of it. I haven't heard of these bullets before but they resemble what guys are shooting out of there's that my gun is modeled after. I hope mine shoots that good when I'm finished.

I believe it's a 1:24 twist on a 24" barrel. I used to shoot the white bullets in the 465 grain with great accuracy but I switched to the "No Excuses" 460 grain and got even better accuracy. The thing I also love about the whites is when loading it, I could push the bullet down the barrel with the pressure from my pinky finger. They slide down very easily with no bullet starter needed. Fast reload!

Marley,

So glad you posted. I have one in a .45, what is your caliber? I could never get mine to group and was planning on trying it one more time tomorrow for the last time before I sell it. I've been shooting the same bullets as you but 80 grains of FFF.

I have a friend that could shoot mine well, but I can't. He convinced me to buy it because he had friends that claimed it could be used for shooting long distances accurately. I guess there is something to it.

Here are my additional gripes, please advise:
1) Number 11 caps aren't all that reliable.
2) I can't ever get it clean enough. I'll spend 30 minutes and my patches keep coming out dark.

Thanks again.

Give the Pyrodex P a try. Doc White recommends it for the whites and has aways worked well for me. I had a big problem with alot of miss fires with the #11s so I call Doc White. He said that my Breech plug nipple was probably worn out or flat. I ordered a new breech plug and haven't had a missfire since. Try those two things and you might be in good shape.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-08-12 AT 08:16PM (MST)[p]Marley, or anybody else.... what is the difference between Pyrodex P and RS? I have always used the RS (in my rifle) but I see where many prefer the P, curious as to what difference it makes. Oh by the way nice shooting!!!

Pyrodex P is fine grained like Triple 7 FFFg.
So Pyrodex RS is like FFg, so its like black powder in the different grades. You can use Pyrodex P in place of RS by reducing you load by 10 - 15% or so.

If you sell it let me know I might be interested. Ron

My time at the range and the 300 yard groups came in handy this year. Took this bull in CO with open sights at 287 yards with this set-up.

"My load: 460 grain No Excuses bullet with 95 grains of Pyrodex"

I would not have thought you could shoot like that, with that combination??? Amazing....

Why not? Its a great combo. 460 grain bullet coming out of the barrel around 1400 fps with an insane amount of energy.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-05-12 AT 05:55AM (MST)[p]A 460 gr bullet at 1400 fps has about 2000 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle. At 300 yards you have about 850 ft-lbs of energy left with that flying beer can.

A 300 gr SST at 2050 fps has 2800 ft-lbs at muzzle and almost 1000 ft-lbs at 300 yards.

Still, a great shot on a great bull.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-05-12 AT 07:43AM (MST)[p]My ballistics says 2000 ft-lbs at muzzle and 1050 at 300 yards. I shot my elk at 287 yards in the shoulder, Found the bullet just under the skin on the far side. Plenty of energy.

I am not arguing it all. How can I with your results?

Very impressive to say the least!!!

Interesting thread Marley on how accurate these muzzle loaders can be with practice. I have been watching this and it got me curious about the White Muzzy's so I found one , well actually two. Not as good as deal as yours, but I picked up a .45 super 91 and a brand new never been shot .50 97. The 91 came with the Lymon peep and williams sights.

I'm not digging the front sight and will replace the front sight with a smaller bead. So far I have only been able to shoot the 91 out to 150 yards and I'm very impressed. Looking forward to playing with the range this winter.

I have a question for you on your long range gong. Is that heat treated steel or tempered steel ?

First off I agree with the front sight. I took a file to mine to reduce the size.

My gong is AR500 doesn't even dent when I hit it with a .300 RUM at 200 yards.

You're going to love those whites!!!!

Awesome thread and some great shooting!

Marley, I am looking into getting one of the Lyman peep sights myself. Which one are you using? Is it the 90 MJT Target Receiver Sight? Thanks for any heads up here!

Thanks for the info, Marley. Much appreciated!

I'm looking to put something similar on my T/C Omega. Has anyone used a Lyman peep on a T/C Omega in .50 cal? Any experience would be great to hear about.

Thanks,

I'm also looking for info on a Lyman Peep with Turret for a Remington 700ML?

Do they make them to fit my Gun?

Do they make them in Stainless/Silver?:D:D:D

I used to know of places worth Hiking in to for Elk & Deer!
Thanks to Illegal Bastards & the USFS not enforcing Rules you can Zing in to them Places on Wheelers now & not see a Damn thing!
But by GAWD it don't take long for them U-Tards to get there with all the Unethical BS and the New Technology!

Thanks sj!

I see the Peep Sight that Marley uses has a Target Knob?

The Target knob is the Turret,Right?

So the Peep Site for the Remington(57wjs) doesn't have a Turret knob?

Thanks!

It looks like the one for the 700 is adjustable but with the use of a screw driver. You are correct about the version for the White system it has a target turret for adjustment.

Hey Marley?

I see they sell the Target Knobs separate!

Anybody know if they can be added /swapped out on the Lyman 57 WJS for the Remington?

Yes you can put target knobs on but like I said in the other post you really don't need them. I didn't like them on mine and took them off. Ron

So Ron?

When you're trying to Dial the Sight in for a Longer Shot?

You surely Ain't getting your ScrewDriver out to Turn it are you?

Yes I set the sight for longer shots, but I don't dial it. I push the button and slide it into spot. If I need a couple clicks the large regular standard knob on the top can easily be adjusted without a screw driver. If your ever in the Twin Falls area you can look at mine. Ron

I am looking for the Lyman peep also for a Knight Mountaineer but I couldn't find that they made this for Knights. I've seen the NECG peep but I'm not sure on exactly how either of these adjust in the field. Anyone know if Lyman makes one for Knights or whether the NECG would be similarly adjustable??

Thanks Ron. Looking at it, it looks like it needs to mount on the side of the barrel and the only holes on the Mountaineer are on the top (typically for a scope base). I'll give Brownells a call. It also appears that you'd need a screwdriver to make adjustments and I wasn't sure if they make a sight that doesn't adjust that way.

The way that the 66 mounts to the action is you need to drill and tap the action.
For the Lyman you don't need a screw driver to adjust the setting. It has a push button the releases the slide. Then you can move it to any place or even take it off. For minor adjustments you can twist the elevation screw with your fingers. You can fine tune your adjustment like that. Ron

Congrats on your accuracy here. It appears you are using a Lyman model 57. Is this correct? What exact front sight are you using? Is it a flat front sight or a bead? I have a Knight Mountaineer. I want to mount a Lyman on it and achieve the 3-400 yard accuracy that you are getting. I would like the exact Lyman rear/front sight and turret combo you recommend. Thanks

LAST EDITED ON Oct-15-14 AT 07:34PM (MST)[p]His front sight is a metal one that he uses a dental tool/file to grind down to a point on top, like the top of a small triangle. He states in one of his posts that he is using the Lyman model 57 SMET
