what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

I've read alot of posts lately trying to figure out which bullet and grain of bullet to have my dad try on his big bull hunt this year and am still in limbo. He will be shooting an accura v2 50cal with BH209 and it seems like the top 3 bullets are barnes, thor, and hornady. and i know every gun is different as far as accuracy but what about performance. My dad is 65 yrs old and this will more than likely be his last oppertunity to kill a big bull. and i just want to give him the best odds. Sorry if this is a lame repeated post.

Thanks frontier for the info i have not checked out the new breech plug but i will for sure, and you think the 250gr bullet is good for a big bull elk. And one more thing can i get those bullets from cabelas or sportsmans wharehouse or do i have to order them

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

Forgot to say.. YES I know the 250 Thor is more than enough for an elk! You can always up it to the 300gr Thor if you want a heavier bullet. They are solid copper so, no need to worry about it fragmenting.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-17-12 AT 05:59PM (MST)[p]I do love thors if conicals are your only option. However, if sabots can be used, I would give good consideration for the barnes muzzleloading sabots. Thors are a barnes conical, so the bullet construction is essentially the same. Thors can only be bought from the one guy who sells them and you have to figure out the exact size of your bore.

Don't get me wrong, he has a great thing for those of use who want to or have to use a conical. If you are interested, email and ask him to send you a "sizing pack". He will send them free. Then you have to run them through your specific gun and decide what size you need, then you order that size.

With barnes sabots, they are available at many places and are generally cheaper than the Thor, so if it were me, I would order some barnes with sabots and try them. Probaly in 290 grain.

The bullet is the same, so price and availability would tip me toward sabots.

And I have never fired a sabot through a muzzleloader because I only hunt CO where conicals are required.

If I were hunting elk with a Thor, I would try the 300 gr first and if it were accurate, hunt with that. The trajectory is not enough to worry about with the bigger bullet, so why not have the extra umpth.

I have also used the Hornady 350 gr to take 2 elk and have been happy with them. I am using a 300 gr this year for deer and my brother is shooting the 350 for elk. It is not as tough as the barnes bullets, but is a lead alloy, so does the job. However, several people with CVAs have indicated that they are very hard to load. They load great in my Omega and Knight.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-17-12 AT 09:44PM (MST)[p]FG, Why don't you tell him you have never used a thor on a Big Bull Elk. In fact you have never killed a bull. You killed one young cow with a PRB. So I have to ask when are you going to tell him you have no personal knowledge of killing elk? All you have is other guys stories. Ron

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

I will be hunting this year with a Knight Mountaineer, 100 gn of BH-209, and 250gn Thor. Tried the 300gn Thor but the 250 shot better. No past history with this bullet but research showed it to be a high qualilty bullet that does not fragment and made by Barnes. Four years ago I killed a nice 5X5 with an 50cal Austin & Hallack, 110gn of 777, and a 338gn Platinum Power Belt.

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

Not bullet proof but tough. Post a big bull picture you killed. All I have seen you post is a picture of a skinny young cow. Ron

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

I'm sure if you shoot a bull elk in the vitals with a 250 grain thor it will die. Elk have been killed with less.

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

Yep, and a lot of elk have died with a 130 gr shot from a 270, but I wouldn't use the 130 if I hunted elk with my 270.

Bottom line is that for realistic muzzleloader ranges (for me), the 300 gr is just as accurate and doesn't fall that much faster. 10 years from now, I might be using the 250, but need more REAL info from the field before I feel comfortable doing that.

Hope you get the opportunity to show us how the 250 works.

What the hell does that even mean?

So shooting a doe is the same as shooting a bull?

I just hoe you don't end up taking a poor shot on a bull and lose it. You don't want to listen to anyone tell you they are tough animals. Ron

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

ive lost deer with 45cal maxihunters, I now use quality bullets with a proven track record.

You never heard that saying? My rifle knows poor bull from fat cow. Thats an old mountain man saying.

A bullet that expands to around .970" is going to put that animal down in a purdy big hurry with a shot through the lungs.

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

I have never heard such a stupid saying. What does it even mean? A poor bull from a fat cow?
Just because a bullet expands to .970 doesn't mean it will penetrate. If it hits a rib dead center and opens up to .970 I am going to bet your spending a long day tracking. I hope you have snow.
Ron

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

thors dont open up on ribs, they need juice to open them. Tissue basically. You can hit a rock dead on and a thor wont open.

Poor bull - Fat cow. Why settle for stringy bull when you got a nice fat yummy cow. Whats stupid about it?

I wouldn't do any betting, I am always proving dudes like you wrong. I normally hunt with a video camera over my shoulder to show folks how things perform. Powerbelts, round balls, sabots, head space adjustment, you name it.

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

You said you have a bull tag didn't you? Is your rifle going to pass all small bulls and shoot a cow? You say your rifle knows the difference. Are you going to pass the small bull and shoot a cow?

I don't believe for one moment that a thor will not open on a rock and it will on tissue. That bullet on a shoulder shot is a lost bull. Say what you want. guys that have shot elk won't buy your cr@p. For what it is worth. I hope you don't do like most inexperienced elk hunters and wound a few bullet and say they got away with minor wounds.
Your overall lack of knowledge of killing elk will bite you if your not careful. I hope you don't lose elk with your ego. Ron

My rifle knows yummy bull from poor bull. Im not picky and take what i can get. I save the trophies for the guys on tv :D

Thors run of hydraulic system, they need tissue/water in order to expand. Shooting rocks normally makes a scary sound as they zip through the air.

I did find these some years ago under some boulders.

Bone wont deform them.

A 8" piece of cedar wont stop them.

Nor will a 5 gallon bucket of sand turned to almost a rock.

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

Prove me wrong. If your elk is made of sand looks like your in business. Ron

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

A bullet that won't open on a rock but will on meat. Horse #####. You didn't prove anything. NO one believes your story. NO ONE. Ron

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

I forgot, Your rifle doesn't know a bull elk from a pile of $hit. I don't think you know the difference either. It takes energy and a well made bullet. On top of that I have seen green horns like you fall apart shooting elk. I hope for your sake you don't live up to my expectations. Ron

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

LOL there was a time when the talk Ron is doing would get me fired up and steaming, but right now I just shake my head and laugh, Something in the air hes breathing or something, never seen him act like this in all the years.

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

I am tired of a guy that has no personal knowledge of killing elk claiming to know it all done it all. In case you don't get who I am talking about it is you FG. Your pictures mean nothing. I am done. You need to get some personal experience in killing elk. Good luck. Ron

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

The reason you not fired up and steaming is you know I am right. Your a wannabe. Ron

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

I hesitate to revitalize this thread, but I tried to email and call Thor to get a size pack sent to me and email came back undeliverable and the phone number didn't work either. Any idea of who I need to contact to try these bullets out?

Thanks

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

You Two gonna need a Room?

Or did you settle it?:D

I got quite a LOL out of this Thread! Go Ahead!

Make Me take it down!

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

I've shot six bulls with T/c 250gr shockwave bonded sabots and none has gone more than 100yds before game over

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

Unless you are hunting CO, ID, or any state that prohibits sabots. Go to any decent sporting good store and buy some Barnes TMZ, or TEZ bullets. In 250gr and 290gr. I have killed bulls with both. Whichever one is more accurate in your gun shoot it. They will both do the job

RE: what is the best bullet for big bull elk?

Good hell Ron sounds like a real ass! I would take a thor and put it thru an elk. Same thing as a T-ez bullet. Its gonna kill. What does super Ron suggest?

O--one
B--big
A--ass
M--mistake
A--america
