Hornady 200gr SST Low Drags 45 cal

Anyone have experience with this bullet is 45 cal? I see lots of folks using it in the 50 cal muzzy's. But can't find much about the 45 cal. Good, bad, ugly? Any deer kills with it? How did it perform? I'm gonna try the BH 209 powder with the CCI 209M primers. I'm having one heck of a time getting my Omega to group. I just put a 1x Pine Ridge on it with a TC base and Weaver rings. I'm about ready to break out the 50 cal Hawken and throw some round balls down range!

#1 reason TC stopped making the .45cal omega and encores. The barrels were extremely rough and accuracy was poor. You may find it helpful to use JB Bore paste ' White jar with blue lettering' and lap that bore a good 150 + strokes.

Would valve polishing compound work as good as the bore paste? If not where can I find the stuff you suggested. Start at the muzzle, leave the breech plug in or out? Thanks man.

brownells, midway usa, they carry it.

Valve lapping compound is pretty rough, i would not recommend it personally.

My .50 Omega likes the tighter fitting sabots best. I've tried a wide variety of bullets and sabots, and accuracy is significantly better with the tightest fitting one I've tried (barnes TMZ). The low drag sabots may be easier to load, but if they're going down fairly easy I'd try something with thicker petals. Swab the bore between shots if you're using anything but BH209. As far as performance on game, they are essentially a jacketed pistol bullet with a spire point. Expect them to perform as such which means good performance at moderate velocities and ranges.

Thanks bull fighter. I'm having one heck of a time finding any BH209 and the CCIM primers. Locally, the shelves are wiped clean. I may just hafta order some online. Thanks again for the input. This is the funnest frustration a guy can have. Once I finally work up a good load, I think I'll have a great feeling of accomplishment. Then, if I can slide a slug into a big nasty buck, that will be the icing on the cake.

I shoot the easy glide sabots with a Hornady 300 grain XTP in my CVA Accura. Best accuracy I have ever got from a muzzleloader.I live in Michigan where sabots are legal.
When the XTP are not availlable ,I shoot Speer 260 grain HP.

I finally got my hands on some BH209. That is some incredible stuff. Twelve shots in a row without swabbing once. I put a 3X9 on the omega to help figure out which load is the best for this rifle. So far, 70 grains of BH209, federal 209a primer and a 200 grain Hornady SST gave me a 4 inch group at 100yds. I also tried the JB's bore paste, 100 in and outs. But before that I used some valve polishing compound to lap the barrel. I only gave it 24 reps with the valve compound. I think a combination of everything has turned this thing into a shooter. I still have some work to do developing the best load. ..but I'm way closer than I was a week ago. Thanks for all the advice guys!

Look into the Deadcenter bullets from PR bullets.com. Cabelas and Sportsmans carry them sometimes. My knight 45 loves the 260 grain version. They are very accurate and I have had good results on deer and elk with them I love my 45 but it can be frustrating finding a good bullet for it.

We have been shooting a 45 cal T/C Omega and a 45 cal Encore for years and love them. Zero accuracy problems. Mostly hunted antelope with Hornady 45 cal SST with the tan sabots. Have achieved good accuracy with 70 gr/weight of BH209 which is equivalent to 100 gr. volume with CCI 209Ms. We have taken about 5 antelope with good success. Would not hesitate on using this load on deer.
