Measuring Blackhorn 209

I am new to the muzzleloader deal and I was wondering about measuring Blackhorn. Do you shooters who shoot it measure it by weight on a scale or by volume in one of the Blackhorn tubes? What charge you have found good groups with?

LAST EDITED ON Mar-16-14 AT 11:32AM (MST)[p]When you hear of someone shooting "100 gr of BH 209" (or any powder), they are talking VOLUME. Get you a volumetric measuring tube to measure ANY powder, from real black to pyrodex, 777, or blackhorn 209.

Someday, if you figure out what volume of powder is the most accurate, and you want to measure what that weighs on a scale and then start weighing your loads you can, but it will be different for each powder. Never compare a weighed load of one powder to different powder, only volume comparisons.

As far as how much to use of BH 209, keep in mind that it is about 15% more powerful than real black powder, so when you use 100 gr by vomume, you are using the equivalent of 115 of real black powder.

I use between 80-100 gr of BH 209 by volume. I have heard of people using up to 120 gr by volume (never exceed this) but that KICKS way too hard for me.

My elk loads are 90-95 gr of BH 209. That is plenty of power to kill any elk.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-06-14 AT 08:07AM (MST)[p]And mine is 100 grn of BH209 by volume and a 250 Barnes TEZ. I use a brass measuring device. And a TC Omega Z5 50cal. Out to 200 yrds.
Each rifle shoots different so try different amounts with different bullets starting from 80 grns up to 110.
Personally, I would never go over manufacturers recomendations.

I weigh mine and use 86 grains by weight which is maximum. I put it behind 290 grain Barnes TMZ w/yellow Harvester Sabots. By the way the 290 grain TMZ are better downrange than the 250's due to the higher B.C.

I started with the TMZ's ,but they are just damn hard to jam down my barrel. Yellow Sabots. They shoot great, but a pain. Someone suggested the TEZ's so I just got some to try. But they are 250's which I have taken deer and elk with.
What do you suggest to ease loading TMZ's?

What "txhunter58" said.
Measure it by volume.

Once you find the perfect load, you can weigh it, and then make pre measured loads of that weight.

I started at 90 grains(by volume), and worked my way up.
Things got better and better until 115, where it got erratic, and recoil got problematic.
I backed down to 110, and shoot Barns 250 T-EZs.

Each gun has a different "sweet spot"'. You should experiment, but be careful. Don't overload it.

Big tube had BH 209/Small tube has 250 T-EZ and 2 primers.
Taped together, fast re-load in the field.

Throw away the junk sabots that come from Barnes! Get yourself the yellow sabots made by harvester. Trust me. You won't regret it.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-27-14 AT 10:40AM (MST)[p]Thanks for the tips guys.
So the yellow sabots that come on the TMZ's are not the ones you suggest?
I have conical Jag,but it is way longer than the one that came on TC ramrod. Do I just let it hang out the front while hunting? Or do I change ramrods? What set up for rods do you guys use that fits TC Omega. I carry a folding handle accessory,& T-handle starter. This is just for follow up shots .I carry similar speed loaders,TC made. They work great.
I just looked up Spin_jag and will be ordering one soon!

I use 90 Grains by volume of Blackhorn under a 300 Grain Hornady SST Low Drag Sabot, at first I had problems with the bullet but after shooting this load more and adjusting my powder charge every thing came together and I am very please with it....

There's room for all of God's creatures, right next to the mashed potato's and gravy.

Thanks everyone for your advice! The load that I found that shoots the best is 80 grains of Blackhorn 209(weighed on a scale) and the Barnes TEZ 250 grain. Hopefully I can connect with a deer or an antelope with it!
