I plan on applying for a Idaho Muzzy tag this year and have a question.

What muzzle loaders are allowed? I have a couple of buddies that had a great hunt last year. (tough draw) One is a resident, the other NR. They had lots of problems with their guns. Mis-fires, delayed fires, etc.

I have a CVA Accura that goes bang every time I pull the trigger but for some reason i believe in Idaho you can't use an enclosed ignition system??

I have a Hawken also. Thinking the Hawken meets Idaho rules but the Accura doesn't??

I appreciate you input/knowledge if you see this.

The gun needs to have an open breach so the nipple is exposed to the weather. The Remington 700 with the #11 cap nipple is ok. The Knight plunger guns are all good to go if they have a #11. The side locks are also good to go. Knight has several that are legal with the westerner package.
The hang fires could have been from the powder. I use Pyrodex P. The finer granules flow into the flash channel very well. The oil that they were using could also be a problem as well as the cleaning method. I normally use Remoil and I tried some other stuff that caused a hang fire that cost me an elk. I only use remoil now. I think I posted a cleaning method a while back.

Thanks. What I thought.

I haven't shot my Hawken since about 1992. And back then it wasn't that accurate but it did go boom when I pulled the trigger. I always popped a cap or 2 before I loaded it. If dust blew away from the end of the barrel, it would shoot when I loaded it.

Long shot to draw the tag but IF that happens, I'll spend alot of time getting it to shoot. As I remember the front sight was too big which was my biggest problem. It does have a Green Mountain replacement barrel on it with a 1-32 twist.

Thanks again for setting me straight.

Is a Remington converted to 209 Ignition legal in Idaho?

If you have a green mountain fast twist you have the best gun for the hunt in my opinion. Look up my back posts on installing long range sights and bullets for that barrel. It should be a 1-28 twist is it is the Green Mountian LRH.
Let me know how I can help. Ron

No, the rules for Idaho are they have to use a #11 percussion cap. The 209 would be illegal. Ron

Ron, I've followed your posts over the years, and have seen the amazing accuracy you have attainted from "traditional" guns. When I've compared your results versus mine with a "modern" muzzleloader, I wasn't that impressed. Then I would realize I was comparing apples to oranges.

If I draw I'll probably wear you out with questions.

Are you shooting with a scope with the inline? Idaho allows inlines that meet the rule but No scopes unless you have a vision problem. Even then it is a 0 mag scope. Let me know if you draw. Ron

I put a scope on the gun just to work up loads. Once I had what shot best in my gun I started looking at "peeps and thin posts." While I was doing that I thought, "What the he!!, I might as well shoot it with the stock sights."

The gun shot better than I thought I could shoot with open sights in any gun. I shot it out to 250 yards and felt confident at that range but it was my max. 10" low at 200, another 13" low at 250. I figured a 23" drop was as much as I felt I could accurately compensate for after shooting 25-30 rounds at that range. A 8" paper plate was sead every time at that range.

The accura has an enclosed ignition system and takes 209 primers. I believe both of these are illegal in Idaho??

If I draw this long shot tag I plan on working with my Hawken. If that doesn't work I'll be looking for a new muzzy.
