I finally got a good brown on the Hawken I made, I killed the browning acid with baking soda twice and oiled the barrel up good, but a brown rust residue is still surfacing. Why? and How do you stop it? Are there any of you experts out there.

I found another person on a different blog that had the dry rust continuously surfacing. He had also done all of Laurel Mountains instructions to a tee. I have never had this problem before. He found using acetone stopped the dry surface rust. I am going to try that next.

Here some photos of the gun.

I have read that household ammonia will neutralize acid in aqua fortis on wood. Could not hurt to try it on metal?

I have a absolutely beautiful curly maple full stock blank. I called Green Mountain Barrel Co. and they are out of stock on the 50 Cal 42" barrels. I have purchased barrels from H&H, Green River, and Green Mountain. The first two are out of business and GM is to busy making modern barrels.

I don't want to wait. What barrel is the best for a Kentucky Long rifle now days?

I believe your choices are a bit limited and some choices have long wait times once ordered.
#1 - Rice Barrels http://ricebarrels.com/
#2 - Colerain Barrels http://www.colerainbarrel.com/
#3 - Robert Hoyt (no website and is tough to get on the phone but is reported to do great work)
There are others but info lately is that they take a long time to deliver, but you will get a good product.
You could call Pecatonica River Longrifle Supply and see if they have what you want in stock, they list green mountain in their catalog along with Colerain barrels.

An add on this forum classified section asking to buy may turn up a barrel for you, these members know their stuff and have items to sell and trade frequently.

For a kentucky I suggest you seriously consider a awamped profile barrel. Good luck!

Here is a 62 cal. left hand flinter I made. I am sure glad I started using a steam house to brown the metal. Thanks for all of the input.
