Difference in primers

So I was out shooting my Omega last night and I ran out of the regular w209 primers that I normally use. I switched to some Remington 777 primers that I had picked up, and I was consistently shooting anywhere from 3-6 inches low at 100 yards. I shoot 777pellets, 100 grains with Hornady SST 250 sabots. I went out to 200 yards and was pretty discouraged. I shoot red dot scope only( Utah). I know the 777 primers are a little "less hot" than the regular 209. Anyone else have or seen this issue. I will be purchasing w209 primers this week.. The crud ring has never been that big of an issue to me, and I was running patches after every 2 shots.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-15-14 AT 05:42AM (MST)[p]Different primers can definitely cause a different POI. Just because it was hitting lower doesn't mean it was a less powerful load. Just means that the harmonics of the barrel when pushed with that combination caused the bullet to come out differently. If you are not getting hangfires and the 777 primers are accurate, you can just adjust the POI up and you are good to go.

At times, I have LOWERED the amount of powder and the bullets were striking the target HIGHER. Have also raised the amount of powder and they were hitting lower.

Again, accuracy is probably more important than where it hits before you adjust the sights. Of course, that is assuming that you have enough adjustment of your sights to get it back up to the desired area

I can understand that. The other thing I forgot to mention is that the 777 primers had a lot of blowback and were very black compared to the w209's. They were harder to remove post-shot. Do you think this has anything to do with the slightly longer length of the w209 primers?

IMO
Yes. The Win 209 primer is typically the longest shotshell primer on the market. Diameter can also be a factor in how a primer fits and fills the breech having an effect on blowback.

Could anyone report about the difference between a CCI 209 shotgun primer and a CCI 209 Muzzle loader primer? Strength? Power? Fire Power? Ignition power? Any differences between these two items?
