I am in the market for a new Muzzleloader. I live in Utah, hunt deer and Elk but mainly deer with a muzzleloader.
I want an inline that will last a while. In Ut. You can only use a 1x scope, so scope or no and which brand?
I've used a Thompson Ctr Omega of my buddies. Good gun but not real easy to clean. I prefer the newer break open or quick release type.
If you were in my shoes :
Which gun would you buy?
What bullets/load?
Scope or not?
What's the ideal set up

I'm buying this week so thought I'd ask the experts! Thanks-

Whatever u end up with definite yes on the 1 power scope. Lining up 2 items (cross hairs and target) is much faster, simpler than lining up 3 (front sight, rear sight, target)

LAST EDITED ON Aug-22-14 AT 10:07PM (MST)[p]Here is a link to all of CVA's muzzleloaders, all of them have the QRBP breech plugs, you can shoot the gun 20 times or more and remove the breech plug with your fingers. You should be able to find one in your price range. Don't let cost fool you, the CVA Wolf if the cheapest gun CVA has, but a lot of people say it is a shooter.

As far as a bullet, I have a CVA Accura, I had occasion to shoot the Barnes Spitfire TEZ 250 grain bullet, a person gave me 3 to shoot, I used 110 grains of BH 209 powder, after I left the range and went home, I ordered 30 of them. I am going to adjust my scope next weekend for them.

I also shot the Hornady 300 grain XTP with a green crush rib from harvester it got 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards with 100 grains of BH 209. I shot the hornady 250 grain sst/ml with 100 grains of BH 209 with T/C superglide sabots, and got 1" groups at 100 yards.

I would definitely get a scope if you can work it into your budget.

I don't know if you need it or not, but CVA also has NW legal guns.

I would also highly recommend shooting BH 209 powder, google it for all the advantages. If you do go with BH 209 powder and get a CVA you will need a BH 209 Breech Plug:

The Breech plug takes a 1/8" drill bit and should be use with finger pressure only in the fire channel every 3 to 6 shots to keep it clean. When I first got my gun I didn't know anything about a drill bit or what it was for. I shot my gun 20 times, when I got home to clean it the Flash channel was almost closed up. It was a job to drill out. Wrap black electrical tape around the drill bit until you can grip it between your fingers.

CVA site is kind of high in prices, anything you decide to buy look around on the internet, you can get it cheaper.

I just bought the CVA Accura MR and put a new vortex crossfire 1x scope. I am shooting 1/2" groups at 100 yards with 90 grains T7 and 300 grain Hornady SST. I AM 6 inches low at 200 yards but 1" groups. That should work for an elk.

Dang, I would be happy with that! Thanks for the info Where is you purchase it? I didn't see that one at cabelas.

The scope is new and was on sale for $99.
Al's sporting goods in Logan had it at their grand opening for $329. Cabelas online was $429. I got lucky on the sale n

That's a great deal!! I just bought the Acura V2 with the thumb hole. I'm tall and have big hands so it fit me perfect. The MR version is awesome and I preferred it but it didn't quite fit me right.
Thanks for the info really appreciate it, and Good Luck to you this year.

Correction to my earlier post, if you need a North West Edition for a gun, the caps and Musket Caps will not burn BH 209,they are not hot enough to set a charge of BH 209 off.
