Siting in a new traditions striker fire questions?

I have a brand new traditions striker fire .50 only fired 15 times. I have iron sites setup on this gun I purchased the gun from bass pro shops couple months ago and the sites separate from traditions. I am shooting a 150 grains of powder 3 pellets of 50 grain 777, a Winchester 209 primer and a 250 grain .50 cal high speed low drag hornady sst bullet. I am having troubles siting this combination in. I had the first 3 shots consistently low 12 in and to the right 2 I made 1 change I moved the rear site forward 2 hash marks and the gun began shooting way high and not consistent. Is there any specsil break in I should do on this gun? What should I change? Trying to get this thing dialed in for my hunt next month. Mule deer hunt. Any info be greatly appreciated thanks. I'm all new to the muzzleloader stuff and a little stumped by this

I don't know much about traditions but the basic rules apply to all muzzleloaders.

Shooting a maximum charge of powder is not always the most efficient or accurate. Shooting the Pellets you are very limited to trying different charges. You basically have one other charge to try with the 50 grain pellets and that is 100 grains (2 pellets) I would start there. If you are shooting fff triple 7 I would go to ff triple 7. If that doesn't work I would move to T7 in powder, you can vary your charges to 110 grains which you can't get with pellets.

If you can't get accuracy there, Try the TEZ 250 or 300 grain Barnes Bullet with 110 grains of T7, it is a really good bullet.

Don't worry where your gun is shooting yet, get it to group well then adjust your sights.

Post back and let us know how it is going.

Thank you fit The advice. I looked up the information on my gun. The web site shows the rifling is 1:28" from my understanding that is a fairly fast spin. I talked to a family member with some experience with muzzleloaders he shoots a disk knight and recommend changing powder charges and possibly trying the 250 grain the barns tmz. Might try 100 grains if 777 with the barns tmz and see how that patterns for me. Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated

That is a good start, The TEZ 250 should impress you, good luck. With 777 I would swab the bore between shots with a damp patch and one or 2 dry ones. That should increase your accuracy.

Post back and let me know how it works out.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-25-14 AT 11:42AM (MST)[p]Yes I cleaned the Gun between shots towards the end I did try pushing it to 2 shots between cleanings didn't see any difference either way. I looked around online before going wasn't able to find any special instructions how to break the gun in or how to site it in. I'm all new to this kinda wondering if I'm just missing a simple trick or if its in the charge combination. Hopefully I can find some of these bullets at a local gun shop without having to order them online.

As stated above - start with a smaller powder charge. For best accuracy, loose powder is better, in my experience.

Also, what was the temp outside? Hot weather (and not allowing the barrel to cool between shots) will really mess with sabot consistency.

95 degrees 5 mph wind. I did not pay attention to barrel temps.

That may be part of your problem then. Hot weather wrecks sabots. Let the barrel cool more.

Ok I placed a order through cabelas for the barns timid MZ 250 grain should be to my house next Tuesday. Ill do a full detail on the gun. And try to plan a evening shoot some time next week before leaving for my archery hunt.

I shot some of the barns tmz with a 100 grains of powder instead of 150. I also cleaned the barrel extra good between shots. I also shot in the evening in the shade temps were still around 90 degrees gave the barrel more time to cool between shots but kinda hard in 90 degree weather. I tryed siting in off a table and lead sled shooting at a 12 in target I started at 25 yards then 50 then 100 still did not have the consistancy that I wanted to get and was unable to get anything close to dead on. I was lucky enough to get it on the paper at 25 yards then made a minor 2 hash mark adjustment down then I was back off the paper again. I ordered more tmz and tez barns billets to try they should be here tomorrow. So I'm going to attempt to go back out Thursday to shoot a few hours. This things frustrating trying to get it sited in. Any other tricks or anything I might be missing?

Did you try loose powder? Can you use a scope where you are hunting? I tried shooting open sights at 100 yards all for about 5 mins. Think I had a scope ordered before I even left the range. Now I'm shooting 2 inch groups at 200 yards pretty consistently.

I have not tried loose powder only the 50 grain pellets of 777 the last time out I did drop from 150 grains to 100 grains. No I cannot use a scope of any kind. I will be hunting Nevada next week.soneone told me look into a different rear site? I think it was a peep site? But when I asked a buddy he said he thought sane states do not allow them also. And I looked all over online couldn't find a peep site for a traditions striker fire.

get rid of the sabots. I think your bullet is too light for 150gr.

I shoot a 338gr power belt platinum and 150 gr of 777 and its deadly accurate
