This is my first time shooting a muzzleloader. What is the most common distance or distances you all use for sighting it in with a scope?
This is my setup
CVA Wolf 50 cal 24" barrel
Pyrodex 100gr
Powerbelt 295 gr. aerotip
Any help is greatly appreciated

LAST EDITED ON Oct-08-14 AT 01:32PM (MST)[p]This is not a centerfire rifle. You can't state that you are going to be hunting with 100 gr of prodex and an "XYZ" bullet. The gun will tell you whether or not it likes that combination. That is why I only use loose powder, so I can taylor the load to my particular gun. AND EVERY GUN IS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT. With pellets, you can do 90 gr/ 100 gr/110 grains, so get enough pellets to try all those combos. One might be much more accurate than another.

First of all, start at 25 yards with a boresighted gun and shoot/adjust the scope until you are hitting paper.

Then practice shooting at 25 until you feel proficient with this new fangled way to shoot a rifle. Don't adjust the scope until you are comfortable with loading and shooting the gun.

So when you are comfortable and have it hitting paper at 25 yards, don't readjust the sight until you find out which load and bullet gives you the most accurate. AS stated, try several combinations to see if one is better. Once you have determined that one load is the most accurate, then adjust your scope to dead zero at 25 yards. At that range you bullet will still be climbing, so expect your bullet to hit high at least out to 50 yards or so.

Now decide your longest shot you will take (100, 150, 200 yards?) That will determine where you zero your load. There are some good ballistic tables out there (check on powerbelt website for theirs) and they will have charts that tell you where a certain bullet with a certain powder will travel.

Move out to 50, then 100 yards and beyond making some adjustments to the scope and you are good to go.
