Rear Peep

Looks like I will be heading to Colorado this fall for a Muzzleloader buck, which means I will be removing my trusty red dot scope. I'm looking for suggestions for the open sight route for my TC Omega. I'm leaning toward the Williams peep, but have read about the likely need for a shorter front sight. Anybody try the EABCO rear peep with the rail system? Does it require a new front blade as well? Other suggestions?
Thanks

I have a Williams Peep on my Omega. I had to shim it with a refrigerator magnet, but it works well. I used an aftermarket front short fiberoptic front sight because I use the "6 O'clock" hold, so that makes the problem even worse.

Have you gotten any conical to shoot well out of that gun?

I tried the Williams peep on my TC Omega and had problems with it. I ordered a rear peep sight from E. Arthur Brown Co.,
www.eabco.com 320 834 3000 and it works very well. The rear sight comes on a rib that also accepts scope rings so you can work up loads with the scope and then take it off and shoot open sights. I did not have to change the front blade and this set up shoots 1" @100 yards. I think you will be pleased with this set-up. I also bought the adjustable rear peep, but have not even used it as the standard one shoots so well.
Hope this helps.

Txhunter, I have not tried any conicals. I have pretty much been shooting 777 pellets and Hornady SST sabots, with decent results. I am thinking of going with BH209, and either a Hornady FPB, or a Barnes non-saboted bullet. Any other suggestions?
Shasta, I think I will give that eabco sight a try. Does it come standard with the brass insert (twilight peep) that I see in the pictures?

I stand corrected, I cant find a non-saboted Barnes, so it looks like Hornady FPB. Not a big fan of Powerbelts.

LAST EDITED ON May-22-15 AT 02:17PM (MST)[p]I love BH 209 in my Omega. I really hope your Omega likes conicals better than mine did. I would definitely start with the Hornady FPB. Get a pack of 300s and 350s. If the 300s shoot, they would be great for deer. However, the 350s fly pretty flat too, so if they are more accurate, go with them. My gun likes the 350s better for some reason.

My elk load was 95 gr of BH 209 and the 350 FPB, so I would start around 90 gr and jump by 5 gr increments up to about 110 gr. I think you stand a better chance at decent accuracy with lower loads too.

If they won't fly, you can get a barnes conical. It is called the Thor. https://www.thorbullets.com/ and they are a solid copper bullet made by barnes.
Call him and he will send out a "sizing pack" free to see what size your barrel is.

The only 3 bullets that would fly half way decent out of my Omega were powerbelts, FPBs and Thors. Anything with a rear bell seemed to stabilize decently. However, someone else said they got some flat based conicals to fly decent by putting a MMP ballistic sub bridge. They are cheap so it might be worth a try. http://mmpsabots.com/store/50-cal-bbsb-ballistic-bridge-sub-base/

I finally gave up on my Omega as a Colorado gun and got me a knight and then a White to shoot conicals with. Hope you fair better.

You might check these out ddoc....parker hydra con...just got some in the mail, haven't shot any yet...bob makes one specifically for TC barrel diameter

this is one of his test groups out of a savage...check out the cross section of the bullet, pretty wicked design

I know bob well enough now to trust his creations completely...I've said it before, but the gentleman is a true wizard

Also check out Lyman as an alternative to the recommended Williams for your aperture sight

Cheers, good luck!

They are a great bullet, and the diameter might be right, but it will still be very iffy that they would shoot out of a T/C barrel with a QLA. My Omega shot them at 6" groups at 25 yards! Not the fault of the bullet, but the QLA. Might try them with a MMP sub base?

For sure Tx, that QLA is a nightmare...very few that shoot any full bores very well at all...and beyond that, finding that special something that flies well out of a particular unit is another nightmare...yuck

If you have that contraption on your barrel Ddoc, I'd have someone qualified cut the damned thing off or replace the barrel entirely if it wont shoot unsaboted slugs well

Just not worth the hassle no

Good Luck and Have Fun!

Great Western, what company or more specifically which barrel would you purchase to replace a TC factory barrel in order to be Colorado legal? I want a barrel that will shoot the Thor or the Hornady FPB or the sort of newer Federal all copper bullet. Any advice available? Cow Tag

^Sorry bud, I ain't the guy to ask...some of the more hardcore MZ guys around here might be able to help ya

I do know of some guys that have had their QLA cut off...shoot, if I remember correctly, Txhunter did just that with an omega I believe

Or you could always do what I did with mine and just get rid of it :)

Anyway, best of luck

So does the Williams peep sight need to be shimmed on most of the TC muzzleloaders or does it just depend on the particular gun? I too am looking into the Williams and eabco peep sights but I'd rather not have to "shim" the sight to make it work. Would The eabco system looks sufficient also but I don't ever plan on using a scope on my muzzy especially here in NV and I've read a few guys saying they've had to shim the eabco rib peep as well?
