Fouled vs clean barrel

I notice that my gun/load shoots a few inches higher at 100 yards out of a clean barrel. If you see that in a regular rifle, hunt with a fouled barrel. Black powder and most substitutes are corrosive. Would it be best to adjust the sights for the first shot and remember to hold higher with a follow up or hunt with s fouled bore?

I hunt with a fouled barrel. If I am using 777 or pyrodex, I pop off a couple of caps, then pour aprox 20 gr of powder in the barrel with no bullet. Keep it pointing toward the sky and pop off another cap. Then swab and load for the hunt.

With BH 209, I shoot a load, then load up for the hunt. Usually the last time I shoot at the range before a hunt (couple of days to a week) since I don't worry about the corrosion

LAST EDITED ON Jun-08-15 AT 12:04PM (MST)[p]Easier said than done. I don't want to have to remember anything except aim at the spot you want to hit when a "big-un" walks out. Your mind in that situation wants to do things precisely.

And many times it isn't just as simple as aim 2" low. Many times the first shot might be 2 inches to the left/right and two inches high/low

If you can't remember then just zero the gun in with a clean bore. If it's consistently shooting a few inches high it shouldn't be a problem. One shot is all you need right?

Personally, I don't like hunting on a fouled bore.

To each his own. I have hunted with a fouled barrel for 25 years and have gotten used to it. Have not had any rust problems either

To zero on a clean barrel takes so much time at the range. Shoot clean/shoot clean/shoot clean/etc....... Especially when you go out to work up a new load and are switching powder amounts/bullets in one session. I would rather shoot one shot, then I don't have to worry about the next 30, especially with BH 209 where you don't swab between shots.

Yes, to each their own. I just can't bring myself to leave a gun fouled for the whole hunt.

I use triple 7 and foul mine the day before the hunt. It has stayed that way for 5-7 days and I have not had a corrosion issue yet. I use to really worry about it and would clean it during the hunt after about three days.

I do the same: shoot and reload every 3 days during the hunt.

BH is a whole other animal though. Last year fouled my barrel a few days before leaving for my Colorado hunt. Loaded up the night before opening, shot and reloaded every 3 days during the hunt (without cleaning), then shot it at the end of the hunt (tag soup!). Then packed the gun up and went home. It was about 5 days after getting home that I cleaned the gun for good. No issues. Of course that was with a stainless barrel, but even they can rust.

I only hunt with a clean barrel. I work up my loads for a clean barrel and sight in with a clean barrel. After I get my load and sight in then I check for 5 shots no cleaning. If the load blows out I work up a different load.
