CCI Primer Information and Clarification

Recently had a well versed and experienced gun shop owner to inform me that the CCI ML 209 primer and the CCI 209 shotgun primer was the exact same thing. I emailed the CCI company yesterday and one of their representatives immediately answered my question. He said that IN ORDER OF HOTNESS: CCI Magnum then CCI shotgun and then the CCI ML primer. Again, this is in the order of HOTNESS. I recently used the CCI shotgun primer in my first practice black powder shooting session recently using BlackHorn powder at 100 grains by volume. TC Encore .50 with the sort of new Federal copper premium bullets. I believe that I will purchase a box of the CCI ML 209 primers and find out if the ML primer causes my old TC Encore to improve its accuracy or if the groups widen. Have any of you MM members performed this little experiment before? Any publishable results? I will report my findings soon. Cow Tag

CCI Inline MZL is certainly NOT the same primer as the regular CCI or CCI Magum primers.

You can easily notice a difference when using pyrodex or triple 7 when you test all 3 primers. They CCI And CCI Mag both produce a horrible impossible crud ring with Pyrodex and Triple 7 to the point after one shots, it was impossible to reload my knight. Switched to the CCI MZL and I did 6 shots without ever getting a crud right.

With the MZL primers work flawless with certain breech plugs? Yes, especially with the modified breech plugs and CVA/Western powders blackhorn209 breech plug due to the short flash channel.

Now if you have loose head space where it makes a mess inside the action.. You're going to experience a hang fire or misfire during the wrong time when you need it to go bang.

The lower temp primers like the Winchester 777 & CCI MZL primers also leave a LOT of powder fouling behind when used with BH209, a thick sooty fouling and unburnt granules of powder.

Frontier, I plan on using a TC Encore ML rifle this fall in Colorado. Plan on using Black Horn powder so which primer would you recommend that I use for this hunting trip? I had one practice session using the Black Horn in my Encore and everything seemed to be fine as far as ignition was concerned. I was using the CCI shotgun 209 primer during my first practice session. Which primer would you use with the Black Horn and my TC Encore? Cow Tag

The slightly longer Winchester 209 would be my first choice, followed by Federal 209A and CCI-M.

Just shot BH209 for the first time tonight out of my Omega. I used W209's and had hardly any residue. Got really good groups at 50 yards, cloverleafing with the Hornady FPB 300gr but it opened up a bit at 100. Of course this was my first round with my new peeprib rear sight as well, and I was tired by the time I reached 100 yards. We shall see. I have always shot W209's and like them.

BH 209 works best with a "hotter" primer, so I would not use the MZL CCI primer but one of the others mentioned.

My choice is always the Fed 209A primers. It's the hottest primer.

From the BH 209 web site:

We have experienced the best performance, consistency and accuracy with CCI 209M and Federal 209A. NOTE: DO NOT use 209 muzzleloading primers such as Winchester Triple 7, Remington Kleenbore, Federal Fusion, or CCI In-Line MZL.

>fit tighter in the tc
>plug making it much cleaner

I found this to be true.I use W209 shotgun primers in my Omega z5,w/BH209
I have CCI209's as back-up too.
I gave the TC ones that came with it away...junk,IMHO.

Got my info from BH site as stated above....
I use Win. W209 shotshell primers in my Z5 Omega w/BH209

Had some CCI's but were hard to find at the time.
I found the Win's easy to get and always work.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-21-15 AT 04:08PM (MST)[p]The Winchesters are a wee-bit longer and easier to remove upon being fired. I have about 500 Federal 209A's and they stick like glue to my breechplug all the time. I use a small needle-nose extractor from Harbor Freight to remove them. What a pain and shortly will be switching to Winchester 209s.

I have a TC loader/extractor. Levers under like a chisel and any pop out.Holds those tiny buggers to slide right in.Handy tools for a old guy with big hands and reading glasses...

LAST EDITED ON Jun-21-15 AT 08:54PM (MST)[p]Cowtag, the Fiocchi "616" shotshell primers work best in my Knight and my bud's Triumph...they fit a bit more snug than the others and aren't too "hot", nor too "mild"; in my experience, they supply the most consistent ignition and accuracy out of both guns with the same relatively heavy powder load of 110 gr of blackhorn

Good Luck and Have Fun

Cheers,

Adam

**edit--don't know how your encore's breech plug relates to these two guns, but ya might try em
