I'd heard all the Hype on how Clean This BlackHorn 209 Powder is!

It Ain't that Clean!

We did Try a few Different Loads with the BlackHorn 209 Powder & it is Grouping better than the Triple7 Powder/Loads We tried a Week ago!

I called & Talked with a BlackHorn 209 Rep & He Claimed the BH 209 was Hotter than GOEX 3fff,I don't know about that?

Damn near as Dirty as 3fff Black!

The BH 209 Powder didn't really like pouring out of My Powder Measures Neither,Gonna take a Measure with a Big opening on the End!

We Tried the PowerBelt AeroLites in 300 gr & PowerBelt Platinum Aerotips 338 Grain with the Best Accuracy being 100 Grains of BH 209 by Volume out of 2 different Guns!

Both the 300 & the 338's are shooting the same accuracy wise!

We Tried 120 Grains of BH 209 & it just wasn't Quite as Accurate out of either Guns as a 100 Grains!

We got em Grouping Fairly Well!

Now to start Twisting on the Worthless 1X Scopes next time We go to the Range!

I'm Telling you 200 Grains of Powder is too much for any kind of Accuracy!

With the Powerbelts I was using/300 & 338's!

There wasn't any problem loading them!

But I was Swabbing the Barrels after every shot!

As Black as it was after 1 shot I can't Imagine what it'd be like after 15-20 shots let alone 5lbs of Frontiers loads!:D

Hey FrontierGander?

How often you Swabbing your Barrel?

Maybe it doesn't get ant Dirtier after the 1st Sho?
I can't Imagine that?

But Hey,Maybe I'm Wrong?

I'm sure Gander will School me on this!

After doing some more Research,BH 209 is recommending NOT Swabbing the Barrel at all!

Not until it needs Cleaning anyway!

My BAD!

So!

Next time at the Range I'll Fire several Loads without Swabbing & see what happens!

1/2 full, hell I think that's pushin it. Stuff is way pricey for what little you get. I hope I can find a load that shoots quick! Price of that powder and bullets can drain your wallet in a hurry!

10oz of powder. Most dont realize theres a size limit when selling certain things. Drinks and other packaging has to be a certain size in order to be legal. Its a real screwed up thing to have a law like that but when you have people electing fools like the guy we have now... Its understandable.

Bess, that black you're dredging up aint from the BH, its from 10 years of shooting that old stinky crap and never cleaning your gun! Lil smokey deserves a little more love than you've been giving her all these years.

Just screwing with you.

I'm with frontier though. Last time at the range, shot 18 loads with out swabbing between. Ran a solvent patch down at the end and it came out kinda grey. Not anything like the Triple 7 black crud that comes out after every shot. Plus, no seat ring to scrub out either.

The round 2-1/2" patches by me are 10.99 for 200. I used tyo use 15 patches on Pyrodex and blackpowder cleaning. Now with Blackhorn, I use five patches. So every jug of Blackhorn I buy at $35 is really only $30, when I factor-in the patch savings from using 2/3s less.

What a crock! BH 209 out performs all other powders in every way. It's cleaner, and absorbs no moisture.

All this has been proven over and over. The only negative is the price.

Hey FokWest!

I Think You're Right!

That Black Nasty 3fff is Blackest,Nastiest,Stinkinest,Hardest Hitting Thing out there!

Maybe gonna Wean the 700 off the 600 Grain Slugs!

If I find a decent shooting load?

Lots of New Bullets & Powders out there since I dialed Her in Many years ago!

We Fired a New Remington 700 with 200 Grains of Triple7 & there was one Hell of a Crud Ring in just one shot!

I was Not Impressed!

I'm different than Most Guys!

I've Fired about 200 Rounds out of My Gun in the Last Few Weeks & Haven't touched the Scope yet!

Just seeing what's Grouping & what Ain't!

Getting Real Close to what the Gun wants too shoot!

Yup,It's Pricey!

Hunters, using a heavy lead bullet, would any of think that 70 grains of (volume measure) Black Horn 209 powder would provide enough energy and power to kill a cow elk at 100 yards? I shot today using 100 and then 90 grains of BH and the recoil was stout. Remington 700 in .54 caliber pushing a 518 grain No Excuses lead bullet (wool pad in between the powder charge and the bullet). CCI magnum primer (209)......add all of this up and the recoil was brutal. I got to flinching and this made me shoot LOW at 100 steps. My question is this: Is 70 grains of BH powder enough?

Kinda my point, we're talkin cow elk not buffalo. Why the 500+ grain bullet? I shoot a 310 grain .54 cal with 100 grains of powder. Kicks bout like a 12 guage 2 3/4 inch slug, accurate, manageable, and they're either on the other side or barely passed thru. Again JMO, just another way to skin this cat.

The 518 grain No Excuses bullet likes my old Remington .54 M.L. rifle. It is an accurate combination out to 125 yards for me. Elk Assassin advised to go slow and heavy back a couple of years ago and I took his advice....he was talking specifically about his Remington 700 and what it liked (most accurate). Tried BH powder for the first time this morn and it has much more KICK to it than does 777. Could anyone figure the fps of 70 grains of BH and the No Excuses big lead conical?

You might try a SIMS recoil pad. That really tames the recoil for me. Also, I got a Coldwell lead slead to shoot off of but DON'T put any weights in it. Just the sled by itself tames recoil by a bunch on the bench. When you are hunting, you won't notice the recoil.

It will definitely work with 70, but for some reason I like at least 80-90. If you figure out a way to tame the recoil at the bench, you should be good to go.

I am not sure if they have a screw in model of SIMS pad for the gun you use, but one of the slip ons should fit, and they are on sale. They help a BUNCH!

You can either put it over the pad you already have, but that makes the butt longer, so I usually take off the factory pad and put on the slip on. You just have to measure the butt end and see which size would fit.

When WA was a all lead state I was shooting 460gr great plains bullets with 100 gr of triple7..I tried 7 or 8 different bullets and this one was by far the best performing,so I see why you stick with them.

I shot 17 shots tonight with Blackhorn and its amazing how you can just keep loading and shooting with no cleaning.

The biggest problem I seen in your message was power belt. Out of maybe 50 guys I only know one that has shot them and continued to us them. They dont build pressure right imo and tumble outside of 100. Just a thought good luck!

Reports an these (Pittman?s) and Parker MH at bh209 speeds is that they do not exspand and often pencil through game.

A 45 hole probably will do it quick but it's not ideal.

I trust a few higher bc bullets at bh209 velocities.

Parker BE - I use ina CVB wolf, my backup gun but at my sabotless speeds they are a little fragile inside 200 yards.

Parker 270 emax- extremely accurate out of my sabotless but wind blows them around a lot at 400 to 500 yards. Wish they had a 325 or 350 gr.

My final decision was a 344 Bomb: i have shot them to 725 yards several times on steel and took two mule deer at 250 and 280. Both dropped where they were standing. I have been shooting them since they came out unfortanately I only get a buck tag every 2 to 3 years and didn't get a shot on a bull elk this year.

What did I say about this picture Bess? It is the first time I've seen the chicken in the background though, and the rotella. Is that your pet rooster?

If you are having problems with Blackhorn, you are doing something wrong. It will rust your gun though. Western powders replaced two of my muzzies the first year it came out, because the bores rusted worse than Goex can do. They may have changed the formula because I haven't had a problem since.
