Youth Load

My 13 year old daughter will be hunting deer for the first time this year. Right know I am shooting a CVA Accura with 100gr of Blackhorn pushing a 300 gr XTP. Too heavy of a load for her. I am going to drop the bullet down to a 250 gr XTP. Has anybody tried reduced loads with Blackhorn?
Would 50gr be too low of would I be better using Pyrodex for a reduced load?

But Don't lighten the Load to where it only Wounds Animals!

One other thing I've found that works:

Let Her shoot a New Remington Ultimate with 200 Grains of Powder just once!

Then Tell Her You'll Load a 'Ladies Load' Up for Her!:D

Pyrodex is noticeably weaker recoil than Blackhorn, per volume. That 250 with 60 grains of Blackhorn, or that same XTP with 75 gr. of Pyrodex.... take your pick. Both should be fine for 100 yard harvests.

For her you can also consider the 50/40 200gr SST, then use it with the blue 50/40 sabot. Another option is the 195gr. Barnes Expanders

Do it stepwise. No reason to get really restrictive unless you have to. Try the 250 gr bullet with 80 grains of BH 209. That might be enough to get her comfortable and that would be more than adequate for deer.

Also, use something like a lead sled at the range to absorb recoil during practice. The lead sled by itself (without weights) is enough to reduce recoil a lot.

You might want to look into precision rifle sabots. Their dead center bullets have polymer tips and boat-tails. I've killed a few deer with these and have zero complaints. They come in a large array of weights from 200-340gr. When I work up a load for my kids I will use these bullets in 200gr. They are made of lead and will expand when pushed by lighter powder charges. I was getting approximately 1.5-2" groups with these at 100yds. Good luck.

I would start with 80 grs of powder. You could probably get away with a little less but it's my opinion that 50gr is too light.
