Hunters, I have experimented with several different powder choices; different bullets; and several 209 primers in my search for the best hunting load for my almost here 2015 Colorado cow elk black powder hunt. I am satisfied with using a hot CCI magnum 209 primer teamed with a 535 grain No Excuses bullet which is propelled by 90 grains (volume measure) of Black Horn powder substitute. I do place a wool wad between the powder charge and the heavy lead bullet. The rifle will be my old Remington 700 M.L. in .54 caliber. This weapon has been converted to a modern 209 primer ignition system. The accuracy is acceptable at the 100, the 150, and the 200 yard distances. I have a Lyman 57 peep rear sight and a Hi Viz new front bead sight with a green lite pipe. I do not advocate long distance shooting at elk with a black powder rifle. I intend on keeping my killing shot at the acceptable 100 yard distance. My rifle is more accurate than I am anymore with my 67 year old eye balls. I do wish each of you 'Good Hunting Luck' if you are taking to the western slopes in search of big game soon. I have a cow permit during the muzzle loader season in Colorado and I cannot wait to get there. Leaving southern Illinois the day after Labor Day. This Hunting load may not be the one for you but it is the one that I have selected for this hunt. Cow Tag

Glad you found a load to do the job! And that one surely will. That is half the fun, well 10%. LOL Good luck

Howdy cowtag!

Nice Load for Sure!

You Ought to see the Damage My Remington ML 700 with 600 Grain Slugs has done to Animals!

They Don't Limp Off!

I know a few years back Colorado had a Rule saying the Slug/Conical couldn't be any longer than Twice the Diameter which My 600 Grain Slug Violates!

Anybody know if that Rule is still in Effect?

One more thing cowtag!

If you see any more NO-EXCUSE Bullets like you shoot you better Grab them!

NO-EXCUSES Are almost Extinct around here!

Go Ahead!

Make Me take it down!

Yes, they eliminated the length rule a couple of years ago. Before that I had to cut off the plastic tip on my FPBs. Now I don't! :)
