A couple of questions

1. I have a CVA Accura MR. I installed the BH209 BP and got the O-rings (couldn't find the shim kit in stock anywhere). I notice that when I shoot primers (without a load) I get a small amount of black smudge up the side of the primer. However, when I shoot a load, the primers come out perfectly clean. Can anyone explain this?

2. How many shots should I be able to shoot without cleaning the BP before experiencing loss of accuracy? Is it possible to only get 5 or 6 good shots before needing to clean the BP flash hole etc.?

IMHO:
#1 - the back pressure created when a projectile is used expands the primer body just enough more to seal better preventing the sooty blowback from getting past the tip of the primer.

#2 - the amount of carbon fouling in the flame channel can vary depending on the diameter of the channel. My Knight plus has a 5/32" diameter channel and I clean it by hand turning a 5/32" twist drill bit in it. I can get over 12 shots before the channel gets really dirty. A breach plug with a channel of 1/8" diameter would plug up a bit faster. You should not have to clean out the tiny flash hole at all and using an abrasive method like a torch tip cleaner will only erode the flash hole sooner, leading to having to replace the breach plug. 5 or 6 shots should not be a problem.

BTW - another muzzleloader guy that shoots a lot and buys Blackhorn powder in 5 lb jugs has found that flash holes can be eroded in as little as 125 shots using 209 shot shell primers. When that happens you will see more blowback and a decrease in accuracy. He has modified many breach plugs to take a "vent liner" which is less expensive to replace than the entire breach plug.

90% of deer are harvested within 100 yards. Get many more years out of your breechplug by using more sensible 80-90 grain loads with Blackhorn.

Take the centerfire out of your muzzleloader and learn to respect / acknowledge it's limitations and hunt accordingly.

My 90 grains BH209 using a 50/40 SST in 200 grains prints tight on paper, out to 150 yards. That's plenty for 9 out of 10 of us and your shoulder will remain painless, especially when using the most popular and bigger 240-300 grain bullets, which increases recoil also.

Have fun in the woods and at the range. Smile and not flinch. Smile and not be jolted. Use less powder and get more shots out of each 10 oz jug of BH 209.

Thanks sjhgraysage. I have actually read this before, so I was a little torn about using the torch tip cleaner. It's good food for thought.

Triple 7,

I am shooting 100gr BH209 pushing 290 Barnes TEZ. It is giving me good results for now, but I will experiment with different loads when I have more time. However, my hunt is right around the corner, so time is short.
