LAST EDITED ON Sep-28-15 AT 05:08PM (MST)[p]Im headed out this week and i see there is some moisture. Generally i will leave my load in, but i have always hunted good warm, dry weather before.

Also on my speedloads, should i put them in plastic bags to keep condensation out? im going to be staying on the mountain?

Anyone have any advice for me on this.? do i not load until i go after one? will dew get into my load and have a misfire if i leave it in for a couple days....

Thoughts on this?

What powder are you using?

I put my powder in speedloaders like this:

or this:

I preload these, and they are great at keeping powder dry, but if still worried, put them in a ziplock.

I use BH 209 now, so I shoot one time, then load up opening morning with fresh powder and hunt. I use the muzzle mits over the end of the barrel. Never had a misfire in the field, however, if really a lot of rain/moisture, I will shoot the load and reload at least every 2 days. I also never bring my gun inside so as not to warm/cool and get condensation.

Not sure if that answers your questions, but it is a start

I'm shooting pyrodex. The powder type. Not pellets. Thx. I'll check out the links.

Yeah I have 6 speed loaders like those. That's what I'm planning on doing. I may put them in a ziplock to be safe.

I appreciate the response. Thx.

To be clear... if its raining at night you will just leave your rifle outside of your tent but obviously protect it the best you can?

I will be camped close to deer so i was thinking instead of shooting a round first thing, running a patch through it and shooting a cap off to dry things out in the nipple and breach.

Thanks guys.

No, I always have a tent big enough to bring my rifle in the tent with me and wipe it dry. I have never left it outside in the rain. Just don't bring it in a warm house or put it under the truck heater for long. In other words, no extremes in temps.

There is no good answer. With BH 209, I can shoot off a round a couple of days before the hunt, don't clean the rifle, then load it up on opening morning. However, with pyrodex, you are probably asking for rust by doing that, especially with rain. So I would probably pop 3-4 caps off opening morning, then load. Every other day find a place to shoot, then completely clean, then load again.

I have never done it, but if you don't want to shoot to reload, you could use the CO 2 cartriges or a bullet puller instead of shooting the bullet out.

ok, ill do that. ill be far from a heater so there will be no swings in temperature... unfortunately... thanks for the advice. you may have just helped me from blowing it on the buck of a lifetime... we will see.

Thanks.
