so i just got into this wonderful world of muzzleloading and i'm needing some help on a different sight system. i'm in idaho so open sights only. i've got a knight bighorn and i've been shooting 405gr powerbelts with 100gr of triple 7. this is about as good a group as i've gotten at 100yds. it'll do for my elk hunt, and i'm hoping to be able to tighten it up with more practice and playing with different loads. any recommendations on different sights? the stock fiber optics are kind of a pain at 100yds. really eats up the target view. thanks in advance!! i'll take any other tips or advice you want to throw at me too.

Actually, your group is pretty good for standard open sights, at that distance. Minute of elk, out to 200 yards. The load is good, the bullet is good. Only thing now is practice.! Good luck :)

You're managing a 1.5" vertical group at 100 yards with open sights!!! That's damn good. There's guys that can't do that with a centerfire and scope. Tighten up your horizontal with practice and you're golden.

Prior to loading the Powerbelt, insert the wad into the top of the muzzle. It should be snug and positioned straight/evenly to the bore wall. Then load the bullet and seat firmly.

Test a few shots with - then without. In my case, I get improvement WITH, when using a Powerbelt.

I have the same gun and my grouping got way better when I switched down to smaller 290gr powerbelt and 90gr of triple 7.

I have killed three elk with that load. (1 shot each)

i use the all lead 405's. we'll see how she does tomorrow. headed after some yelk. i hope to just get in range. i don't think i'll shoot over 125yds. just don't the gun out past that yet.

I hope you got your elk! I'm surprised that no one has suggested going to a peep sight. If you wish to use a fiber optic on the front, I would go with the smallest one you can see. If you shoot that well at 100 yards with open sights you will shoot better with a peep.

I will second the Peep sight. Williams maks a FP sight that is very good on the knights. This is what mine looked like on my knight when I first put it on.

I use this sight like I use the Lyman. I take a range finder get the range and set the sight for the shot. So for a 175 yard shot the sight is set for 175 yards. Or 100 yards how ever far the shot is. The FP has a screw on the slider that locks it. I decided to change that this winter to this.

The thumb screw on the side makes the slider loose and the target knob on top sets the sight.

I also added a Lyman 17AHB globe sight .404 high this winter and it will also use the Lee Shavers BPCR inserts. I have been using them for the last decade and they will allow shots out to 300 yards. I will have to shim the back sight too since the front sight is a little taller than the factory sight was but I won't have to shim it more than 1/8".
