Hottest primer for blackthorn?

I'm using the Remington STS Primers with Blackhorn 209. I've shot in excess of 600 and never had a mis/hang fire with these. Be sure to keep the flash hole clean. The Winchester primers been fine too. Don't use the 209ML primers with Blackhorn. They have a reduced flash and are designed for 777 powder.

I am into my third can of BH209 since this past fall. I use Federal 209A primers. I have not had one miss fire or hang fire with this combination. The powder is very consistent in form and I get excellent accuracy with it. I have tried 3 different bullets and multiple powder loads and I have been pleased with all. I can go to the range and shoot 20 rounds without swabbing or without any loss of accuracy or ease of loading. There is no need to rush to clean your rifle because the powder is not highly corrosive. Rife cleans up nicely with regular solvent like hoppes #9. I cannot think of any reason not to shoot BH. I would like the price to be better but if I can afford a rifle and bullets then I can afford to shoot the best powder.

CCI 209M. Pack the powder tight and keep the flash channel clean.

LAST EDITED ON May-14-16 AT 07:45PM (MST)[p]I love the stuff. It is all my guns will ever see. No Pyrodex or T7 for me. Ignition is a little tougher but use a recommended primer and keep the channel clear and it will go bang almost as reliably as your centerfire. Like tailchaser mentioned, you need to pack the sabot tightly on the powder charge. I use a bathroom scale to learn the feel. I apply 35 pounds of pressure once the bullet touches the powder charge.

The hottest 209 primer is the Fed 209A followed closely by the CCI 209M. Winchester W209 is pulling third. Any of these will ignite BH209 just fine in my ML guns.

When I first switched to BH209 in my Knight I was using STS and W209 primers. I had numerous misfires and some pretty scary hangfires. I tried changing breechplugs but still had problems.
I then did a little unscientific test of a few primers by "flame testing" the fired primers onto a piece of cardboard. Confirming what bambi says- the CCI 209M and Fed 209A were standouts giving a much larger flame. I have since switched to those primers and never had a single hangfire/misfire- even in damp weather.
I have a couple pics of the results which I could post if I was more compter savvy.

I started out using the Rem STS, because I have a brick for sporting clays, but switched to the Federal 209A when I could get to the gun shop to get a box.

It was immediately obvious that the Federal primers seal my Encore breach plug much better than the Remingtons. I'm now getting much less soot on my scope and action. Just another reason to use federal primers.
