Muzzleloading bullet/sabot options

Looking to see if anyone has had any experience using Berry's Manufacturing Blue Diamond bullet/sabot. I cannot find out much, if any info on these. I was planning to use Parker Match Grade due to reading a lot of reviews on them. I will be shooting a Remington Ultimate 700 and using Blackhorn 209 powder. Long story short I finally drew my LE Elk tag and looking forwards to the hunt. I have plenty of time to try different loads/bullet options. Any feedback will be appreciated.

No experience with the Berry combo. If you shoot Parker you need to shoot the ballistic extreme the match grade is made for smokeless powder with a faster barrel twist and much higher speed than you will get out of the new remington even with 150 grains of blackhorn. If it were me I would shoot the Parker or Harvester PT Scorpion Gold both in 300 grain behind 120 to 150 grain by volume of blackhorn. I have shot the Harvester out to 300 yards with success behind 120 grains of blackhorn through a TC Omega. Hope this helps.

I tried a handful of 300 MH Parker's in my Rem Ultimate and wasn't impressed with the groups. I went from 95 to 100 grains of BH 209 (weighed NOT volume) and was not getting what I wanted. As stated above, maybe the bullet is too long for Rem's 26 twist at the velocities that the Rem can generate.

Bod Parker (great guy) suggested the 275 Ballistic Extreme with the short black sabot that they come with. I have them in my hot little have, as of yesterday, and will be testing withing the next week or so depending on the heat and wind. I want to give them every chance to shoot tight little groups.... or I'll go back to the Accutip 250.

My buddy has the same bullet in the 300's and I'll be trying those too.

If I had an elk tag, I'd opt for the Parker 300 BE for a bit more penetration... but that's just me.

Zeke

PS: It's suggested, by everyone who I talk with, that the spin-loader and spin-starter should be used for the best accuracy. The same one that fits the Accutip should work fine on the Parker BE according to Bob but the MH is a totally different shape and may account for my poor results. We shall see.

I could be wrong, but I believe there are only two manufacturers of sabots in the U.S. Harvester and MMP. I would imagine that one of those two are manufacturing the sabots for Berry's; with the bullet being manufactured at Barry's.

You're probably right but I don't know for sure.
I do know that Parker uses the MMP sabots and they drive them at pretty extreme velocities. They still caution against expecting consistency with hot barrel shooting since any sabot will get soft.

I sure will. The thing is capable of some good groups but we all play for the best. I'll certainly let you know. It looks like it will be into next week or the weekend after that before I can shoot. Sunday is going to be too gusty around here and I have a work day and Board of Directors meeting on Saturday, yuck!

Heck yes, I'd love to talk about a few buck on the Paunsaugunt! I'll PM you my contact info and we can go from there. My first trip down this year will be mid July so I should be able to see good antler by then. You're nice to offer!

Thanks for the feedback. Not sure if you guys have checked out Randy's website; www.randywakeman.com. He has a lot of reviews/write-ups on using various loads and bullet combinations as well as a lot of reviews for specific loads and load date for the Remington Ultimate.

I am going to start out with using Parker's and play around with various load measures.

Yes I have seen Randy's site and reference it all the time. Bob Parker and I spoke, via email, about Randy but I've never met him, emailed or talked to him.
Lots of great info on his site and moreso than just for Rem Ultimates.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Utarchery,

I've been shooting lots of the 275 Parker ballistic extreme at 100 and 300 yards with fabulous results. My groups range from 7" down to 2.5" at 300 yards with 19" drop below line of sight (sighted about 2.75" high at 100)! The average 300 yard group is closer to 5" which I consider perfectly acceptable for deer hunting. I've always said a guy better keep his bullets inside 6" to establish his maximum range.

Settling on 95 BY WEIGHT of the BH209, Rem 9 1/2 primers, 275 BE and the TC super glide yellow sabots and it seems like a winner for me in my Rem Ultimate.

I've shot so much that I'm out of bullets but my friend is delivering more to me in a week or so.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-29-16 AT 01:18PM (MST)[p]....and you have every right to be worried about that especially if you're thinking I was advocating for everyone to run into the field and try it on deer!!!!!!.

Unless the conditions are IDEAL, and a hunter's shot selection and timing is ideal, the actually HUNTING range is far far less. Please refer to my statement about the shooter keeping shots within a 6" bullseye. The distance at which a hunter can do that will vary greatly depending on conditions.

Don't worry about MY selection please, I've been at this big game hunting thing for 5 decades,,, if that makes you feel better. Now you can worry a little less about me!

I'm glad you worry but no need to worry for or about me.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-29-16 AT 01:46PM (MST)[p]By the way, the only thing WORSE than shooting sticks is standing on a basketball and shooting off damn sticks. for me! Maybe in a blind over bait or in a level field (but I only hunt birds in that terrain) but I have no use for them.

Ya, this old guy saw them on TV and tried them but they're too cumbersome, noisy, slow and have zero advantage over God's rests like a tree, rock or bush or my pack.....but that's just me and of course they must work for you.

I used then in Africa but I didn't need to carry them or set them up because I paid for that to be done for me. They were okay but I never figured out how they were better than what I'd used in the field for years.

As usual, just my 2 cents

Can you purchase a Parker bullet that is considered Colorado legal? (A conical bullet made by Parker Bullet Company)?

Cowtag,
I "think" they do but I wasn't looking for them so I cannot speak with certainty.
A quick trip to google and check Parker Productions or Parker bullets should get you right to Bob's site. I know that Bob will answer all sorts of questions through their info email. Good luck!

I'm happy to share my LIMITED knowledge any time in regards to what works and what doesn't work for ME.

We still need to pop a cap and chrono your CF rifle. Maybe Sunday morning? call or text me your schedule..

Hornady has it right on their ballistic chart when they only show up to 250 yards. The foot lbs of energy beyond that drops extremely fast.

What's an acceptable foot pounds of energy to kill a deer for you? 1330? 1200? 1500? 1000?

I suppose it all depends on actual starting bullet velocity and deciding on an acceptable energy level. Armed with that info a guy can decide at what range a bullet "could" kill a deer. It might not mean he SHOULD be shooting that far but at least it can now be part of the discussion.

DO NOT USE THE MATCH HUNTERS AT BH209 Velocities. They will not open up at all. BEs and possible EMAX close range. The MH will probably not shoot out of a sabot very well.

Your best options are Parker BEs, Barnes, or 300 gr SST.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-03-16 AT 02:33PM (MST)[p]I use these but he is not producing any at the moment called bombs.

http://www.kineticperformancellc.com/

the 302gn would be good for a standard MZ.

They are in between the BC of Parker BE and Parker MH. Couple of reviews and photos of hits at 300 to 450yd on whitetails. (added of the BOMBS)

I have shoot a lot and researched a ton and decided these where the best option for BH209 velocities.

With the 302gn, I can get 1950 fps to 2000 fps with BH209 in my CVA Wold (I have not shoot past 100 yards was just testing).

My custom puts them out at 2450-2500 fps and I opted to go with their heavier bullet designed more for custom mz with 1:20 twist barrels (344gn).
