If someone had a new muzzle loader rifle (open sights) would you start out doing your practice shooting at 25 yards? Seems like someone told me that what ever a muzzle loader is doing at 25 yards the bullet will be the same at 100 yards. I intend on changing the open sights on my M.L. rifle from the factory to a set of new Williams sights (front and rear). thinking about shooting first at 25 yards to get the bullet hitting the bulls eye. Any suggestions or advice. Having trouble seeing the front sight clearly. Mirage is about what I see (sort of two front sights) and it is worse in the sunlight. in the darker areas I can see the front sight better.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-27-16 AT 08:14PM (MST)[p]You are on the right track.

Edit;
My eyes are not what they used to be either and have found a 6:00 hold helps me.

Yep, 25 yards, but you will still have to adjust when you increase the distance. I do 25, then 50, then 100.

if you can get some, try 0.5 or 0.75 reading glasses. They cleared up the front sight for me and still allow me to see out to 150 yards.

Normal reading glasses start at around 1.25 or higher, so I had to order mine.

Got my rifle sights an eye check up a few weeks ago. Fresh glasses for the hunt. LOL

If you can do a peep, it should work a lot better for you. You don't care that the peep is a blur, as long as your eye is centered, looking through the hole, so you'll only need to focus on the front site. Hope that helps.

Painting the back side of the front blade bright white may help ya too.
I use old construction plans 36"x48" for sighting in close and far distances those holes show up good way out there.
I even draw lines top to bottom and side to side 1" squares so I can make adjustments to my scope as I go. Works pretty slick.

Black Powder Hunters, Spent time today at the range and I have my Hunting Colorado 2016 LOAD research complete. Using my new CVA Accura M.L. rifle I decided to use the Federal copper BOR bullets in 270 grain weight. Teamed with 90 grains of BH powder by volume measure, and a CCI magnum 209 primer. I traded the factory open sights for new Williams open iron sights and without much difficulty this morn I got the Accura V2 to putting the Federal copper bullets close to the bull's eye at the standard 100 big step distance using a couple of sand bags for a very solid rest/support. As a side note here, I shot several of the platinum 338 grain Power Belt bullets also and their accuracy was very pleasing. Using this rifle, the Power Belt 338's were very accurate. I have confidence in my selection of rifle, the Federal copper bullet, primer, and powder and I am looking forward to the morning of September 10th to appear. I will be in western Colorado hunting for a big ole fine Mrs. Cow Elk at daybreak. Thank you for your advice, comments, and help to my question of concern back a couple of weeks ago. Good Hunting Luck To Each Of You.
