cost per shot

How many rounds do you shoot your muzzleloader in a year and how much does it cost you? I was doing the math on Blackhorn 209 and yes it is expensive. I knew that, but didn't realize the cost per shot. The last time I stocked up on Blackhorn it was $28.99 on sale at Cabelas. Anymore the average cost seems to be around $40 for 10 ounces (my local store is $46.99) So I went with a $40 per bottle average. I shoot 110 grain charges. One bottle gives me 40 charges so that's easy to figure at $1 per charge. The cheapest I find it in 5 pound bottles averages about $.63 per shot without adding hazmat charges.

209 primers average about five cents per each, but what bullets do you use and what is the cost on those? For the last dozen years or so my go to bullet has been power belts. They shoot good in my guns and are easy to load. Prices on those these days, depending on the flavor seem to be around $1-$2 each. I had a stockpile of several hundred that I bought cheap but those just now dried up.

I like to cast bullets and have bought and played with several different molds over the last year. This definitely is the way to go if you don't end up buying half a dozen molds before you find the right one. If you already have casting equipment and a lubrisizer that is. I still haven't found the perfect bullet, but getting closer. I'm thinking of having a custom mold made to get the bullet I want.

If you just put a magnified scope on your gun how many shots do you practice to get intimate with the ballistics and what it does. Personally I like shooting 100 rounds or more. If you are shooting extended ranges, I don't think 10-20 rounds at the range is going to get proficiency. Especially if you want to know what your gun is doing under all circumstances (wind, etc.).

I love the muzzleloader deer hunt in Utah. I knew I spent a lot on feeding my guns and will continue to shoot them a lot. Yes it can be done cheaper, shooting 777 or pyrodex and cheaper pistol bullets bought in bulk. Still for most folks I'm guessing the average cost is between $2-3 each.

I guess I'm strange because I don't mind spending thousands on reloading equipment and components but I have a very hard time spending $50 or more for a box of ammo.

Well deadi,
I've done about the same thing and feel the same as you do.

I think I have it calculated around $4-$5 per shot but I'm sure I'm rounding up to make me feel like a high-roller (Trump-like). ha

Yes, I've shot and practiced a TON to become intimate with my muzzleloader rig and it paid off for me. I made a one shot kill at extended range (extended for a front-stuffer and the distance to remain un-named lest the howls be heard for miles) and it can be attributed to the many many many days at the range and hundreds of rounds fired downrange at various distances and conditions.

Yep, I still cannot bring myself to buy factory rifle ammo and haven't fires a single round of such for over 50 years of big game and varmint hunting.

$4 per shot is easily doable depending on the bullets a person shoots. I like casting and have done it for 26 years. I want to find a mold for a high b.c. 45 caliber bullet in a 300-360 grain range. The closest thing I've found are 45-70 molds but then you have to use sabots for the .458 bullets in a .50 cal gun. The .451-.454 pistol bullets aren't the greatest for long range but I do love the way wide, flat meplats hit game.

If You Like The Kick of a 300 RUM without a Brake just shoot the Ultimate with 200 Grains of Powder!:D

We've got Several of them shooting between 100 & 130 Grains (Volume!) of BH 209 with 338 Platinums!

You don't care about known velocity but you're shooting 200 grains of 209? and yeah, if it says Remington on it, that stands for POS. :)

You Never Shoot 200 Grains of BH 209 out of any Gun!

We Tried Remingtons Recomendation of 200 Grains of "JUNK" Triple7!

KICKIN!

CRUD RING Building in one Shot!

Keep the BH 209 130 Grains or Lower!

You Load that POS of Yours Up with 200 Grains & You'll be Looking for a New Barrel!

I know any mortal muzzy would blow with 200 grains of blackthorn, but I figured maybe your Ultimate was like a smokeless savage and could handle it ;-) Yep triple 7 sucks but it was faster than pyrodex at the time. Be careful with blackthorn 209, it is very corrosive. Western powders replaced a couple of guns for me due to the corrosion. They admitted it was corrosive, apologized and their excuse was "we don't manufacture it and didn't do enough testing to confirm that it was non-corrosive". Mine weren't the only guns they replaced at the time.

I've been shooting 136 grains of BH209 by volume (95 grains by weight) with the 275 BE Parker bullets with the yellow TC super Glide sabots. It records velocities of 2190+/- and the ES is very little. Great load and the thing really shoots out of the Rem Ultimate.

Deadi, I have no idea where the "POS" comment is coming from since this rifle is flat out sweet....except for the tank-like weight...but I suppose that helps tame the brutal recoil. I've shot this load a ton and it works beautifully!

Keep shootin'
Zeke

The POS comment is tongue in cheek, razzing Bess. I'm just not a remington fan. But yes the Remington Ultimate does look nice and I have actually considered one in a moment of weakness ;-)

>Zeke what's that dropping at 300
>yards?

I have the POI about +2.75" at 100 and the POI at 300 is -19".

Much past that and the thing drops like a rock ie: the "drop" at 375 yards doubles the drop at 300 (40").... so let that be a heads-up.

Moment of weakness? The tank is so heavy it would take a moment of strength just to look at one! LOL
I love the way I got it shooting but that weight is something this old guy finds almost too objectionable.
Zeke

The weight of that rifle is what killed the deal for me on the Ultimate muzzy. A big-bolt action is to cumbersome, especially with a 28" barrel that I like.

Low B.C. bullets is what is killing muzzys after 300 yards. I even played with .40 caliber saboted bullets in my 45's. Whoever solves this problem will have a highly marketable product.

I'm not a Big Fan of the Wide Sendero Stock/Grip!

They Are Solid Built Guns But Heavy SOB's!

Cat, I'm taking a rasp to mine this winter. It's not that I can shave a ton of weight off but rather because the grip is chunky, square and unrefined and the forend is better suited on a BR rifle than a field gun. I'll also loose about an inch and a half of forend length in front of the swivel stud of needless weight and bulk. Mine is the laminated variety, of course, so that's why it will work.

I about did it before my LE deer hunt but didn't want to pull it out of the bedded stock since it was tuned and shooting so well. Probably would have been fine but I'm a little A-Retentive!
