I recently found a bunch of these 300 grain PTX bullets and was wondering if anyone has any experience with them. I understand that they were made by Hornady for T/C. I have used the Speer 300 grain Gold Dot for years but am getting low on supply and can't find any anywhere, so I thought I would try these. What say you?

While I don't have any first hand experience with them, all of the reviews I have read people say stay away from them. They are good for paper punching but they do not recommend hunting with them. They had expansion problems.

If you can get them cheap enough, they can be great for off season shooting.

The PTXs have been discontinued for a number of years now. Their performance-level was not good at-all. Lots of complaints.
I believe the PTX was replaced (and improved on) by the FTX.

I contacted Hornady about the PTX as they made them for T/C and was told the following:

"We make the bullets to whatever spec they decide to make it too. We would speculate that they would resemble the SST closely."

I have some cutaway photos of this and similar bullets I will post.
The reason for the expansion problem is the same for most manufactured bullets. They are designed to expand at different velocities. For example a Hornady XTP Mag bullet is designed to expand at higher velocities than the regular XTP. You will see in the cutaway photo that the bullets designed to expand at higher velocities have a thicker jacket than the regular pistol bullets. There is no bullet, to my knowledge, that is designed and will perform at all velocities.
Thanks for the input about these bullets. Hopefully I can get enough information to either change my load or?
