Ok so I am ready to try Buckhorn 209. Gun is sighted in now for pellets 130 gr. Tired of cleaning gun all of the time, from what I have read on here buckhorn is the way to go. I am shooting a TC omega with 250 gr. TC and 209 primer. What would you recommend for my Load? Buckhorn 209? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jack

Hey Jack this is Buckhorn the powder you are interested in trying is called black horn. There are a lot of guys that know more about it than I do but I tested quite a bit and then I got best results with 105 grains of blackhorn and a Barnes 250 grain TEZ out of my 50 caliber gun.

A good starting point is Blackhorn web site.Info here ... powder charge, bullets, velocities and more safety tips.
This new powder makes others ? With Smokepoles many times less powder
= best accuracy ...

As stated, this is a good place to start:

Two things right off the bat that you need to know:

It requires a different cleaner. I use Hoppes #9 which is a petroleum based cleaner

You have to clean out the breechplug with a drillbit BY HAND every time you go home and clean the gun. Read this:

I use 90-95 gr of powder for my elk load with 350-460 gr bullets. With a smaller bullet you could push it harder, but remember that BH 209 is more powerful than pyrodex, so get ready for some recoil at the higher charges. I can see NO reason to every go over 110 gr of powder.

My Omega loves 85 gr by weight of BH209 and a 250 or 300 gr SST/Shockwave bullet in a Harvester sabot. I can easily get 1.5 MOA at 300 yards with this combination. I have been shooting this combo since blackhorn 209 came out (about 9 years ago).

In my TC Omega I have been shooting 250 grain Barnes Spit Fire T-EZ's using 80 grains (measured by weight) of Blackhorn 209. Combination shoots well and I am able to to reload multiple shots before having to swab the barrel.

Lovehunting:

Note that the last two posters are measuring their loads by WEIGHT! Correct me if I am wrong, but seems like 68 gr by weight = 100 gr by volume? So they are shooting well over 100 gr. Those that want to be really precise measure each load out by weight, but I only shoot open sights up to 150 yards and I have never seen the need.
