Silencerco did the homework and received the BATFE response to show that just about anyone (as long as state law permits) that can legally purchase a firearm can get a integral suppressed muzzleloader shipped to their door without the $200 tax stamp. No Form-4, no Form-4473, no waiting period other than waiting on delivery from the time you pay for it.

Silencerco has released their Maxim 50 which is a Traditions Vortek Strikerfire Muzzleloader. Muzzleloaders are not considered firearms by the BATFE, but are
instead antique firearms, a definition and difference that is very distinct. Because of this, a moderator that is permanently affixed to a muzzleloader is not legally defined as a silencer, since it does not attach to a firearm.

Shooters must use full bore bullets (no sabots) and the recommended load is 100 gr by volume of BH209. Not sure how the shooter will clean the permanently attached can other than a solvent tank.

The price is $999. While it is a lot, and about a grand more than I would pay for a Traditions gun, it does open the door to other muzzleloaders being offered with hush tubes.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-09-17 AT 06:50PM (MST)[p]Interesting idea but too many negatives:

Can only use BH 209

Can only use conicals

How in the heck do you clean it?? Watch the video about how to "clean it". No mention is made of how to clean the bore or "silencer"

Price.

And the biggest reason...........It is not a real silencer/suppressor. Sound is still a whopping 139 decibles It lowers sound enough to not have to wear hearing protection, but still is as loud as a chain saw

My buddy has one, and its pretty cool. Enough that I had to have one. Haven't had time to try it, and now other things came up.

I would sell it new in the fancy case for $830 for somebody in Utah that could pick it up in Riverton.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-12-17 AT 07:58AM (MST)[p]Here is a video of one being shot. As with any suppressor, you would have to go subsonic to get any real suppression of sound. He had to drop to 30-35 gr of powder to get any real "silencer" effect.

Not sure shooting one silenced in the field has any real value. Can you imagine the drop of a bullet starting out at 1100 fps or less? And most bullets, even pure lead, requires at least 1100 fps to expand. When it comes out of the bore at 1100, it will be slowing down quickly from there.

I know some folks are testing suppressors on smokeless MLs shooting 300 gr bullets at 2800+ fps and they do work surprisingly well. The best has been the Silencerco Hybrid. Suppressors do not silence like they do on TV. They slow the gasses and move the report away from the shooter. One of the nice features is they reduce recoil like a muzzle brake does without the excessive noise level. As long as the bullet is supersonic you will get the crack of the bullet going downrange, but the muzzle blast is greatly reduced.

For $999 they can keep it. Stupid to pay that kind of money to suppress a muzzle-loader. Davy Crockett is rolling over in his grave.
