White muzzy and Lyman peep

I put a Lyman 57 SMET peep on my White Whitetail and used the factory front sight. What I don't like is how high the peep sits. It sits .350 above the top of the barrel making it prone to getting bent or having branches get under it. As close as I can measure, it appears the front sight is.312 from the bottom of the dovetail to the top of the bead.

What I want to do is to be able to have the peep sit close to the top of the barrel. I am intellectually challenged when it comes to the relationship between the two sights but it seems to me if I had a lower front sight I could lower my peep sight. is that correct? If so, the lowest front sight I have seen is around .100 lower than the one I have. Does that mean I can only lower my peep .100?

Maybe another way to ask the question is what are you guys with White / Lyman set ups using for a front sight and how close to the barrel is your peep?

Thanks for the info.

If a person spends not one second thinking about his rifle yes I guess a branch could get in there. I am sure the sight could break off or bent. I am very careful with my rifles. I am VERY VERY careful with my rifles. That said I have hunted years with Lyman sights and have never messed one up at all. This is how high mine sits on my MK85.

Mine sits that high because I have a globe front sight.

This is the whole rifle. and my son shooting it at 250 yards.

Because the front sight is taller I had to add a shim under the rear sight and I also added a cheek pad.

Yes the sight is high on the gun. My son has rode with that gun hundreds of miles hunting. So far he has never harmed the sights in many years.

Here's my S91 with the Lyman peep. The base with the peep would probably hit the barrel if I didn't have my scope base plates on it so I'm not sure why yours wouldn't be similar as I assumed they'd all be tapped the same.

I'd add that I've not shot this setup yet so I'm not sure whether the front sight would need to be changed and not sure of the specific front sight height. I used the front sight base that came with the gun and have filed the bead off the form a triangle similar to what others have done in order the be able to shoot using the tip of the triangle centered on my target center if that makes sense.

Here's what my Whitetail looks like with that sight. I have a couple other examples of that same sight on Super 91s. My go-to gun is a Super 91 with a very small front sight on it. The rear peep sits almost directly on the barrel when sighted in at 100 yards with that gun. Will try to post pics of that later. (shot it yesterday and it's still in the garage where I cleaned it)
